Forgiveness is for the forgiver, not for the the forgiven. Forgiveness allows the forgiver to move forward. It may take a long time, if at all, for the wife to ever trust her husband again.

Forgiveness cannot be accomplished even by the forgiver until a pennance is paid! Christ himself proved that!
