What will Waxman-Marley cost American taxpayers?
tulsabeacon.com ^ | July 2, 2009 | Ben Lieberman

Ben Lieberman, Senior Policy Analyst for the Thomas A. Roe Institution for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation, made the following points during testimony before the Senate Republican Conference on June 22.
Here are his views on the Waxman-Markey (cap-and-trade) Bill (H.R. 2454) before Congress. The bill passed the House on Friday by a 219-212 vote. Tulsa Congressman John Sullivan missed the vote because he is in the Betty Ford Clinic being treated for alcoholism
The Senate rejected the Lieberman-Warner cap-and-trade bill in June of 2008.
• Cap-and-trade is expensive and amounts to an energy tax.
• It is the “most convoluted attempt at economic central planning” in the history of America.
• It raises the cost of energy so Americans use less of it.
• It regulates electric utilities, oil refiners, natural gas producers and some manufacturers.
• In 2012, a household of four will see a higher annual energy cost of $436 due to the bill. By 2025, the cost will be $1,241. It will average $829 a year in extra energy cost.
• The cost of electricity will go up 90 percent by 2035 under this bill. Gasoline will go up at least 55 percent.
• The overall high energy cost for a family of four will be at least $20,000 a year in 2035 under this bill.
• If you factor in higher production costs, the bill will cost American families $2,979 a year from 2012 -2035. Then the annual cost will be at least $4,600.
• The bill will eliminate 1,145,000 jobs from 2012 to 2035, even with the so-called new green jobs being added. Some jobs will just be lost while others will shift to foreign countries, like China, with smaller tax burdens.
• Agriculture will be hit hard. Farm profits, under this bill, would drop by 28 percent in 2012 and be 57 percent lower through 2035. It puts agricultural exports at a disadvantage.
• Overall, Waxman-Markey reduces gross domestic product by an average of $393 billion annually between 2012 and 2035, and cumulatively by $9.4 trillion.

While all the liberal Koolaid drinkers and zombie sheep are trying desperately to put the best possible light on this legislation and all its hidden costs as well as its reported costs, the country slips further and further into bankruptcy.

I don’t believe anyone is smart enough to calculate what this bill will cost.

I look at the article and they mention all the extra money energy will cost us, but they dont mention the losses to other parts of society. Money spent on energy cannot be spent on charity, food , clothing, a new car, vacations.

Certainly it will be a lot of money being paid for nothing in return, but a close look at what cannot be bought with the money tht is taken by government and sent to other countries to buy tree’s is incalculable,

Only a politician with the destruction of this country as we know it as part of his plan could vote for such a bill.
I say that assuming it would help prevent Global Warming which it will not.

Makes the Teapot Dome scandal look like peanuts.

I like the line from Othello/Repo Man, "I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees." Sure hope none of us ever have to say it for real.

"...you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime..."

The annointed one has kept his promise, it will not increase one single dime, it will increase 30,000 dimes annually to each family for years.

He weasels. A new tax is not and "increase" -- Bam-bam weasel-words it...

How about a commercial:

(1) GHWB video read my lips (image shrinks to screen left) followed immediately with
(2)Bam-bam "Not your income tax, not your payroll tax" quote full screen.
(3) Image shrinks to screen right so they are side by side.
(4)Voice over "They both promised no new/increased taxes. They both raised taxes or passed new taxes. They should both also be one-term presidents..."
Peet (who is NOT a screenwriter)
