Board members at an Otaki Catholic primary school have resigned after five- and six-year-olds were made to pick up used condoms from the playground.
Four St Peter Chanel board members resigned and walked out of a board meeting last week, saying they had no confidence in the principal, board chairwoman or school management, The Dominion Post reported.
Concerns have been also raised about a steady decrease in the school roll and falling numeracy and literacy standards.
Kath Doyle resigned after her six-year-old grandson and four other children were forced to pick up used condoms without protective gloves during a playground cleanup.
She said an older child noticed the condoms and told a teacher, who said they had to be picked up.

I had no idea the Catholic Church in New Zealand sold out
This somehow reminds me of the song 3rd rock from the sun.
Some deziens sneak onto playground for some naughty pleasure.
Kids routine is to clean up playground
Kids complain regularly.
Teacher routinely tells kids to clean up anyway.
Kids complain again ( about something different this time )
Teacher distracted with something else, doesn’t listen to todays excuse, says clean it up anyway.
And now the administration is in tatters and the entire world is up in arms.
Really dumb move.
If rubbers are that prevalent on the playground it would appear a nightime guard is necessary.
Schools down here rarely have security. And unfortunately some lowlifes see nothing wrong with having sex in a school out of hours.
The kids shouldn’t have had to pick these things up, that goes without saying, but it is an exceptional case - normally there’s nothing wrong with expecting kids to help keep their school clean.
Of course, that would mean the teachers have to pick the things up. And I would, but I shouldn’t have to either. Better me than a student, so I’d do it. But it’s disgusting.
Sorry - I’m not sure how they’ve sold out here.
Because lowlifes climb the fences into schools and have sex there?
The teacher handled this badly, I agree - no common sense - but I can’t see how it matters what type of school it was.
