The Queen is to honour the families of Britain's war dead with a new award in her name.
Those who have lost loved ones on the frontline or in terrorist attacks will be presented with the Elizabeth Cross.
In a radio message to the armed forces on the British Forces Broadcasting Service the Queen said: 'I greatly hope that the Elizabeth Cross will give further meaning to the nation's debt of gratitude to the families and loved ones of those who have died in the service of our country.'

It will be interesting to see how widely it is awarded. I know, for example, that Australian troops received British campaign medals until Vietnam as British troops. So did New Zealanders. Canadians as well, though, of course, prior to Vietnam.
What does the symbol on the right arm represent? I know the other three represent England, Ireland, and Scotland.
I know that the Victoria Cross medals are made from the brass cannons captured during the Crimean war. That brass must be nearly over by now.
Actually, the one on the right is the thistle of Scotland, what’s the one on the left.
Rose for England, Thistle for Scotland, Shamrock for Ireland, and Leek for Wales.
There’s enough of the bronze left for about another 80 Victoria Crosses. Not all were cast from that metal (some came from Chinese canons of the Boxer Rebellion, and some from other sources) and a variety of historic military bronzes have been considered and are available if ever needed.
Daffodil for Wales, actually, sorry.
At a guess, the national flower of Wales, the Daffodil.
I believe there is enough for about another 200 medals.
Daffodil for Wales :)
It should, theoretically, be the bluebell for England, but the rose is almost universally used instead.
We already established it’s the lark for Wales. Thanks for the input, though!
Crap, never mind. Not following the thread.
Yes, I know - I didn’t look at it before I posted the first time.
