UK 'deluded' in relying on US for defence, warns thinktank

Assumptions that the US will always come to Britain's rescue are complacent and it is "delusional" to believe that the UK can act alone without closer European defence co-operation, a leading thinktank warns today. A root and branch review of Britain's security interests, including options to avoid renewing the Trident nuclear missile system, is urgently needed, the Institute for Public Policy Research says.

"If we do not strengthen Nato by reinforcing its European pillar, not just on defence but on wider security issues, the result will be neither the status quo nor some other fantasy of wider collective security co-operation," it warns.

"There will be a future crisis that leaves us vulnerable to shifting American interests and opinion, relative US decline and European disunity and weakness, when Nato's political glue fails to hold and Europe is left more exposed than at any time since the second world war. It is delusional to believe some other solution is viable."

I read about this report in the Daily Mail. It calls for large cuts in defence spending and eliminating the UK’s ability to project power independently. The UK would be reduced to having an armed force comparable to Belgium. The man behind the report is Lord Paddy Ashdown who was leader of the Liberal-Democrats during the Thatcher years. He is a leftist who wants to push the UK to become a vassal of the EU.

Yeah, but we’ll give you a set of unplayable DVDs, so what are you complaining about?

A good move while Bambi and the RATS control the USA.

The UK has no ally in this White House. What was once the strongest alliance in the world is now a thing of the past. Part of me would come to the UK’s defense without hesitation but the sensible side of me would stay home because Brits dont seem to want to defend themselves.

Zero isn't even really interested in defending these United States?

He seems to positively hate England.

That’s a statement, not a question.

Yes, UK please understand me when I say this: We will not be there for you. Nope. Ain’t gonna happen. You see we were once led by men, real men, real leaders and even when we had a wuss or two in there (Carter, Clinton) we would still have come to your aid whenever it was needed. Now, however, we have a socialist, egotistical, nightmarishly naive windbag of a president. He will not allow us to come to your aid.

Britain stands alone again - not because she doesn’t have allies, but because her main ally is no friend to her anymore.

“The UK is catching on quickly!”

They’d better. As an American, this is the first time in my very long life that I am absolutely afraid of my government.

The socialized countries in Europe can be socialized because the US paid for their defense. THAT is about to come to a halt. A country cannot afford both socialism and a strong defense. Time to grow up and pay for your own defense Europe.

Exactly. Considering Europe’s lack of appreciation we should do them a favor and pull all troops and assets out. F’em is how I feel about it. Of course, that doesn’t include the Poles and Romanians.

I certainly would not be excited about coming to Europe’s recuse in the future. Done it twice in the last century, I think I’m done with them. They’ll be a muslim contintent in another generation anyway. Let Europe be the Middle East’s problem to defend against Russia.
