Menendez: 'Franken would give Democrats "a little more strength" to pursue their agenda.'

Like an oasis in the desert, the 60-vote Democratic supermajority is a mirage.

Yes, former comedian Al Franken is now Minnesota's senator-elect -- thanks to the state Supreme Court's ruling Tuesday -- giving Democrats enough members in the Senate to hit a filibuster-proof majority. This is no laughing matter.

But that's on a really, really good day. For all intents and purposes, Democrats don't truly have 60 votes in the Senate.

With the addition of Franken, they technically have 58. Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., caucus with Democrats but don't define themselves that way.

Sanders, a socialist, is arguably the most liberal member of the Senate, so he's more than willing to buck the Democratic leadership when he doesn't feel the liberal wing gets a fair shake. Lieberman, by contrast, is a moderate who's plenty willing to challenge the Democratic leadership when he believes it veers too far to the left.

But the Democrats aren't even at 58 votes on most days.

'Franken' and 'Strength' just don't mix (unless you are using your olfactory organs).

The word 'agenda' should frighten anyone.

If “strength” means that which can be detected by our olfactory systems, they are most certainly correct.

Why do you call him a former comedian? From all accounts, his best current thinking is more laughable than his former.

The flip side to this is that there are folks like Snowe and Collins who will play ball on a number of issues.

Still, I’m hopeful (though not necessarily confident), that the worst of 0bama’s agenda can be reined in the next couple of years until 2010. (Assuming that 2010 is a good year for the GOP, which is not a given, either).

He won’t be able to control himself, nor will anyone be able to control him.

He’ll be arrested for drunk driving or assaulting someone before his term is anywhere up.

I have been corresponding with Tester and Baucus here in MT and letting them know that all 7 family members will be working hard to oust them if all they do is tow their party line. Montanans in general whether dem or republican are mighty independent at heart and are surrounded by independent minded people. I will not let up on these guys and they better vote the way they campaign because there are not enough Reservation welfare voters to overcome the conservative dems who will switch sides.

I heard Brit Hume saying something very similar to this on Fox yesterday. I felt better.

Still, I see Collins and Snowe doing their "bi-partisan" best to reliably caucus with the Dims.

Frankly, I am appalled that we now have a US Senator, seated for 6 years, who was elected in what I consider to be the equivalent of a prank.

We all remember that one year in high school when everyone agreed to vote for the ugliest girl or biggest dork for Homecoming queen/king? Not only did it embarass the school, it embarassed the person voted in, who was aware of the reason that he/she was voted in; as the butt of a bad joke.

Al Franken, (that’s you, Al Franken) is truly too stupid to realize that he is just the butt of a very cruel joke that has been perpetrated by the people of Minnesota on the American people.

May God help us all; although I fear that He has forsaken us, due to our infatuation with the culture of death that has taken root in our once-proud society.
