Rasmussen Poll: Obama's Popularity Plunging
News Max ^ | June 30, 2009 | Jim Meyers

The latest Rasmussen daily tracking poll shows that President Barack Obama for the first time has a negative approval index more Americans disapprove of his job performance than approve.

In an exclusive Newsmax interview, pollster Scott Rasmussen also disclosed that, if the economy does not improve over the next year, Obama's numbers will deteriorate even further and Democrats will suffer in 2010.

Rasmussen is founder and CEO of Rasmussen Reports and co-founder of the sports network ESPN. He has been an independent public opinion pollster for over a decade, and most major news organizations cite his reports.

Newsmax.TV's Ashley Martella asked Rasmussen for an overview of the latest tracking poll.

"The raw numbers are pretty straightforward 31 percent of Americans strongly approve of the way Barack Obama is handling his job, 33 percent strongly disapprove," Rasmussen said.

"Before the last week we never had a circumstance where the number who disapprove outweigh the number who approve. So we're in new territory. Right now the approval index, at minus two, is as low as it's been.

It's all well and good that Obama's popularity is plunging, but unless the GOP actually stands up and fights for us, the "gains" that are made in the 2010 Congressional elections will be minimal.

What made 1994 such a bellweather change, was Newt Gingrich's working to nationalize the elections and the "Contract with America". As much as I dislike Newt, his strategy was brilliant.

All I'm seeing with the GOP now is a "Contract with Pusillanimity".

What is the significance of looking ONLY at the “Strongly” numbers?

Are these deemed by the pollsters, the people most likely to vote?

These numbers don’t mean much if there is still a large number of people (outside the “Strongly” camps) still favorably inclined toward the Ivy League Zero.

Without a suitable alternative, Obama is safe. It is not enough to make people uncomfortable, they must be presented with a more desireable alternative, or the status quo will remain.

Who will lead the right?

“Without a suitable alternative, Obama is safe.”

Only to those with eyes squeezed shut and their brain in total lockdown mode.

Obama is the most dangerous thing to have happened to this country since World War II, and he probably exceeds even that global threat.

Yes, I have thought about it for 5 seconds and he does. Easily.

Let’s just give this economy another 6 months of “Bush’s fault”; another spectacular North Korea missile launch; another 300 “press conferences”; more photos of Michelle harvesting veggies in her designer sweats and sneakers; another 50 staged “townhall meetings”; and another 6 months of international despots kicking sand in his vapid face....... and can’t wait to see where his ratings go...

meanwhile the democrat truth squads must be out frantically scouring for more philandering GOP politicians

We have a suitable alternative:

Unfortunately, we'll be given

"Because it's his turn"....and O'Bambi wins another term.

Say what you want but until the Republicans have a LIKEABLE CONSERVATIVE who is consistent, inspiring and clean (ref. SC Gov), Obama does not have a problem. However, Congress might. Remember Bill Clinton? The people liked his personality and gave him a long leash because of it. However, two years after he was elected, he was essentially done because the people viscerated the democratic congress.

So, the more rational and achievable objective would not be to find a Republican Obama but a new Gingrich in Congress. For now, Republicans should do what they can to rally around Boehner...that move would have more immediate and far reaching payoffs.

Here is the trend plotted from Rasmussen data through June 30, 2009. I used a 10 point moving average to smooth out the noise and just plotted the Presidential Approval Index itself. The trend is certainly heading in the "right" direction. If you look close you will see that, as Dick Morris pointed out, Obama got a 100 Day Celebration Bounce along about May 1 but that bounce has faded and the longer term down trend is now clear.

IMHO, if this trend continues it will make Obama and Raul very dangerous. They will not take the trend lightly and you just know they will do something. What will they do? Who knows but whatever it is it will be good for Obama and bad for the country and will be intended to boost his popularity. Scary thought.

You can bet they are sweating in the white house over this.
They know the illusion of great support is key.
Expect some more burger runs and other PR stunts to pump up the numbers.

The GOP is actually in an enviable position of being the party out of power while things get very bumpy on the national scene.

The Democrats are in the unenviable position of having the power to implement an agenda that many of their hard-core supporters are hell-bent on getting done, but that many of their moderate members can't support. This, for example, is why the "card-check" union organization law hasn't gone anywhere . . . and why Barack Obama's successor in the White House will still be answering questions about why openly gay people aren't allowed to serve in the military.

GOP powers that be who could organize this thing are too busy trying to take out Rush and Sarah with leaks and behind-the-scenes sniping.

The Dems and their cheerleaders in the msm are celebrating that the latest Leftist clown, Al Franken, has joined the Democrat circus. However, they have two senators on life support, Byrd and Kennedy, and a number of others who may be vulnerable in ‘10 if the economy and employment continue in the dumpster. MA will always be safe for them, but WVA, coal country, is not. The GOP better be looking for a great candidate who could run for Byrd’s spot in the event of his death...preferably, a candidate who can keep his pants on.
