OAS gives 3-day deadline to Honduran coup leaders

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Organization of American States says Honduran coup leaders have three days to restore deposed President Manuel Zelaya to power. OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza says Honduras "risks being suspended" from the group if the leaders of the military coup do not comply.

Insulza delivered what he called "an ultimatum" as OAS talks regarding the crisis wound past the eight-hour mark.

The 72-hour period appears designed to cover plans for Zelaya, who was ousted in a coup Sunday, to go home, accompanied by the presidents of Argentina and Ecuador, and seek restoration of his authority.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya met Tuesday night with envoys to the Organization of American States to discuss what Argentina's foreign minister called an urgent and dangerous situation in Honduras.

Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana and other Western Hemisphere ambassadors waited for 3 1/2 hours as Zelaya made his way from New York, where earlier in the day the U.N. General Assembly denounced the military coup that drove him from power Sunday. They demanded his immediate return to office.

In a clear threat, Taiana, who was presiding over a special session of the 34-nation assembly, said if the diplomatic approach does not prevail, "we have to take the decision to suspend Honduras in its rights and duties in this organization."

The OAS was expected to challenge the coup, which Zelaya has called brutal and the work of "a small group of usurpers" that carried out "an act of aggression attacking the democratic will of the people."

A year ago, the USA would stand behind freedom and support the rule of law. As it is, I'm guessing we are running the Marxist show in Central America, and Obama is behind the boycotts.

It's unbelievable to me, but I think it's true.

They should have kept him there and held him in prison for trial.

I agree maybe they can do it when he gets back. I feel like we are living in the twilight zone when the whole world wants a ruthless dictator reinstated even our own government.

It do appear that the Communists, Marxists and Socialists have taken total control of the world. You got a Commie bastard dictator who wants to be der Fuhrer for life, the people run him off and the whole damn world starts whining. What a load.

This is what international bodies are worth. I hope people remember this when we tweak the OAS at some later date.

Yes, tell the OAS and anyone else who pops off to go straight to hell.

Honduras’ leader was trying to circumvent its constitution.

What would anyone expect the nation to do in that circumstance?

I know a lot here will pooh pooh this, but it is just my opinion.

The Hondurans should get to DC ASAP and flesh out those drug trade charges. Even the WH bobble heads will go whoa! if those charges get known and are believed by the the American public. Could derail the Castro/Chavez/Obama axis.

OAS is Organization of American Socialists.

If Cuba will not send us cigars, Venezuela will not send us sulfury oil to process for them, Bolivia will not send us ... mud? and Nicaragua will not send us bananas, El Salvador will not send us homeless, we have our own bananas and corn for fuel, we have Starbucks with our own coffee, come try it is very good and $1.50 not $4. We think there is democracy, oligarchy and communism. We think progresivos, solicialistas, marxistas todo es muy close to comunismo. People do not take styrofoam boats to ocean to leave a good place. Americans should recall your Congresistas all at once and redo, you will be okay. The Argentine president needs Chavez oil but the people think he may be next exiled leader, read latin america press reports. Bolivia is too poor. We are fortunate that under Bush in 8 years the country prospered. We are not narcoconomy as they say we are manufacturing and agriculture, the drugs come into Honduras and leave here from airport used by Zelaya and friends. we want this to stop. How can I put picture on here? - Tino
