There are only two reasons that come to mind why Todd Purdum might have written the nasty little hit piece on Sarah Palin for Vanity Fair:
(1) This is red meat to the coastal elites (and wannabees) to which the magazine panders.
(2) Liberals continue to be afraid of Palin as a potential candidate.
The piece only makes sense if the underlying motivation is #1. Otherwise, it's a strategic blunder of the first order. I've had some disagreements with Governor Palin in the past -- for example, the way she handled Bristol Palin's pregnancy.
But any lingering doubts or disagreements any Republican might have with the Governor become irrelevant when one reads the assemblage of snippy innuendo, predictable negative-insider-quotes and the elitist, snobbish tone of pretention that underpins the entire piece.
And there's reason to believe that it' s not just Republicans like me who feel this way. It will be interesting -- when or if Governor Palin once again becomes a legitimate target of the national political media -- to see the extent to which normal people understand that "elite media's" contempt and condescension for Palin is the same contempt and condescension such "journalists" feel for regular Americans like them.
P.S. Anyone note the irony in Purdum's breathless announcement that "what [Palin] wants the public to know about herself doesnt always jibe with reality"? Hellooo -- ever heard of a Chicago pol named Barack Obama? More generally, for what politician does this banal observation not hold true?
Monica Crowley said it well on O’Reilly tonight: “WHY are they still picking on a vice-presidential nominee who LOST — 8 months after they lost?” in an incredulous and frustrated voice.
They’re picking on her because they are terrified of her and what kind of base she can pick up. I’m 28 and adore her - I’d do whatever I could to help her campaign; and I know dozens of friends who feel the same way. And beyond me, I know there are millions more.
Along with a huge dose of pure, unadulterated sexism.
Why would you encourage people to provide traffic for these pukes? Enough.
I feel the same way as you do. The liberals are terrified of her as a candidate who can/will beat the chosen one come 2012.
I'm 55 and I'll spend the energy, like a 28 year old, to do the same.
Vanity Fair is a liberal rag. They fawned over John Edwards. The rag also ran constant hit peices on Tom Delay and Rudy Giuliani. The onyl time the rag sells copies is when it puts Gisele on the cover.
You are exactly right.
Look folks, these Democrats and Liberals aren’t very smart. They don’t know how to stalk their prey or use subterfuge - they telegraph their thoughts and fears so clearly a blind man could see it.
They know Sarah Palin has “star power” for lack of a better phrase. She’s every bit as charismatic and attractive as Obama or JFK - and that’s what got them crapping in their drawers.
Their best target is our best hope for the future.
Monica that was a rhetorical question:
We all know why Sarah Palin has been attacked every day since August 29th by one faction or another.
Obama has got the word out that nothing can get in the way of his re-election including that ‘hick from Wasillia’.
Soros told me that I can spend as much money as I need to destroy her, the sooner the better.
I adore her also. Just think about how much money she could make in the private sector as some kind of energy executive .. that would be almost as awesome as being prez. She will continue to be successful no matter what elite weenies say about her.
I trust Sarah to make the right choices, she is something. A real model for young women.
It may have been a trick to boost ratings but I believe the treatment of Sarah Palin by the news media and the Obama camp pushed Greta Van Susteren to the right. During the 2007-2008 primaries Van Susteren was an obvious Hillary Clinton admirer. Then when the news media shifted their support to Obama and began attacking Clinton, Van Susteren seemed to undergo an epiphany. When Sarah Palin became McCain's running mate Van Susteren eventually became one of the Governor's biggest fans. Again Van Susteren watched the “liberal” news media slander and degrade a woman who might derail their "rock star." Today Greta talks a lot more like a conservative.
3. Vanity Fair needs a circulation boost.
They are scared s-h-i-t-less of her because she’s a female Reagan. The real deal. All they have is a puppet who reads from two teleprompters back and forth back and forth back and forth like he’s watching a tennis match.
Still, even Slick could be right once in a while, I suppose. Even though that would seem to violate at least two of the Laws of Thermodynamics.
How about a huge, enormously-adulterated dose of gayism?
I've been telling everyone who can still stand me that I still want to see Sarah in a photo-op consulting with Baroness Thatcher. Sarah and Maggie in a keeper photo together would make Maureen Dowd's head explode.
Oh, and the recent "Republican" scandals involving prominent GOP'ers who might be nominees for 2012?
How many on this board think that's a coincidence, a happenstance, just something that fell out of the sky and just "happened"?
Any takers?
The 'Rat hit-machine is still hard at work, 24/7/365.
You can’t blame the libs when a GOP guy messes up as royally as M.S. did. You can only blame the guy who committed the adultery. The libs will take advantage of the situation, just like our talk radio guys lambasted a John Edwards for the same hypocrisy. It’s the way of the world. No party holds a trophy for purity.
Palin is such a threat to the liberal establishment there seems to be at least four to five hit pieces on her a week, I think Palin would be wise to call them on it.
I dont think there was 1/100 the amount of hit pieces on Dan Quayle in 1993 and he actually was a vice prez for four years previous.
The are afraid of Pain for one reason and that is this:
When Sarah Joined the Ticket before the RNC and after her speech at the RNC the jump in the polls for McCain whom was handpicked by leftists alarmed them and scared them to death, They were genuinely frightened that the loser they hand picked might actually win against the anointed one.
If she could cause such a jump in the polls then she could be the one that could usurp the anointed one in 2012, thus the numerous hit pieces.
Either Palin can ride the storm like a Norse Thunder goddess and clean in house in 2012 or she acts as a great decoy taking the fire and hits from the liberal mainstream while we get another true conservative in Office in 2012.
In either role, i am sure Sarah Palin is up for it.
