Five teens shot on Detroit’s west side

Detroit — Four Detroit Public Schools students and a former student were shot Tuesday afternoon after leaving Cody High School, said Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steve Wasko.
The shooting happened just before 3 p.m. near a bus stop and gas station at the Southfield Freeway service drive and West Warren Avenue. Two men were seen in ski masks approaching the teens — three boys and two girls, ages 14-16 — and said, “You know who we’re looking for” before firing roughly 15 rounds. The two men then drove off in a getaway car, Detroit police said.
The conditions of the teens were not immediately available. The area of the shooting is known for high gang activity.

To put it in perspective, there were 309 homicides in Detroit in 2008. This is just slightly lower than the total number of American deaths in Iraq in 2008.
The highest US murder rate is still claimed by New Orleans.
