General Motors has announced that it will quit its joint venture auto manufacturing plant, operated with Toyota, leaving the unionized facility's future in Toyota's hands. Toyota already sells 80% of the products built there, but the workforce is organized by the UAW, so if Toyota were to keep the facility open under its own management, it would find itself sitting across the bargaining table from the very union that seeks to organize its other plants in North America.
New United Motor Manufacturing Company (NUMMI - pronounced "new me") is the sole remaining automobile manufacturing facility on the West Coast, and its closure would idle almost 5000 assembly workers, plus an estimated 35,000 related jobs in support functions. Roughly a decade ago, a spokesman for the Port of Oakland told me that 10% of the port's cargo was related to NUMMI, which imports many components from Japan and sources globally for materials such as steel, so the 35,000 figure may be quite realistic. California already has the nation's highest unemployment rate.

this plant takes the corrolla platform, puts on Pontiac sheet metal and calls it a vibe.
some corrolla’s are also made there.
an extra charge option is to put the camry’s 4 cyl in it.
the matrix, the vibe’s twin is made in canada.
the japanese will almost certainly shutter this plant and transfer work elsewhere.
Yep close it and build new in right to work state like Texas. Toyota would MAKE money short and long term IMO.
UAW infests Toyota I won’t buy from them either. ......

Someday I might buy a used GM vehicle, but I won't buy any GM or Chrysler vehicle made since the obama takeover. I hate what they all are doing to America!
So UAW owned GM pulls out of a UAW facility. The UAW doesn’t want to deal with the UAW. There’s a message in there somewhere.
Toyota will do what it considers best for Toyota based on sound business practices, not on whether they are dealing with a union or not. At least they should be.
Admittedly that would probably mean they will close it.
Unfortunately, in the current economy, Toyota has been losing money on the San Antonio plant. It's so bad they stopped work on the Tupelo MS plant,(much cheaper than even San Antonio) the buildings are just sitting empty.
I do IT consulting at the NUMMI plant, the next month will prove to be interesting, needless to say.
Agreed, but I think much has to do w/demand being low & gettin’ lower.
The Vibe was the best car GM made, probably because it’s a Toyota. The Matrix is also much better than the Corolla.
