This is the bruised and battered face of 24-year-old burglar Gregory McCalium who got more than he bargained for when he broke into the home of a 72-year-old former boxing champ.
Former boxer Frank Corti, 72, said he was compelled to defend himself and his wife after Gregory McCalium threatened them at their Oxfordshire home and gave him a black eye and bloodied lip.
McCalium, 24, confronted the elderly couple after a row over noise levels between the neighbours on Queens Close, Botley, Oxford.
Oxford Crown Court heard McCalium was drunk after attending an all-night party when he forced his way into Mr Corti's home at 8am on August 19 last year.
McCalium, a cocktail barman who was found guilty of aggravated burglary after a trial, threw the knife towards Mr Corti but the former Royal Engineer dodged the blade and punched him to the face twice before restraining him.
Detective Constable Jon Shaw of Thames Valley Police said: "The elderly man, who at the time was at home with his wife, was able to subdue the man until the police arrived.
"Fortunately no one was more injured in this incident but this was still a terrifying situation and McCalium must now pay for his actions.

Police said charges against Frank Corti, for defending himself, would probably be forthcoming in the next few days. “One criminal at a time” the police were quoted as saying.

Knowing the British justice system, the barman will probably be given three months of probation and that’s all.

Reminds me of a story about the muggers who took on Jack Dempsey. Just a rich old guy in his seventies—they thought—until he laid out the two of them with just two punches. No one was every more ferocious in the ring than Dempsey.
McCalium smashed the old man with his eye, and pummled him with his lip, it was brutal.....fortunately for McCalium his was not able to make his last move, ramming his groin into the Corti’s foot.

Wow! That guy took 2 hard shots! Seeing something like this only increases my respect for a boxers skills when they can still punch out a 24 year old at the age of 72.

Actually the police said “I hope that the victim, and his wife, might now be able to put this ordeal behind them and get on with their lives.”

Normally I would prefer the homeowner to shoot the intruder but...that guy is never going to live this one down.
