A knife-wielding burglar got a shock when he attacked a pensioner in his home - a couple of right hooks to the face. Gregory McCalium had not realised that 72-year-old victim Frank Corti was a retired boxer.
This police mugshot of 23-year-old McCalium, taken soon after he was arrested at Mr Corti's home, shows the facial injuries the OAP inflicted as he made a citizen's arrest.
Today, McCalium is beginning a four-and-a-half year prison sentence after a judge told him he 'got what he deserved.'
A court heard how Mr Corti - who served with the Royal Engineers in North Africa from 1956-58 - was at home with his wife Margaret at the time of the incident.
McCalium, a neighbour, smashed his way into the couple's home and lunged at Mr Corti with a blade.
The pensioner dodged the knife and punched the intruder twice in the face, leaving him with a black eye and swollen lip.
After the sentencing, Mr Corti said: 'We are very pleased (with the sentence) because our life was severely disrupted by the incident and we are pleased he won't be troubling us for a few years. He then restrained McCalium until police arrived.

I doubt he'll be troubling you for a lot longer, Sir.
The picture is hilarious. Good for Mr. Corti.
Now let me get this straight -
in England, it’s OK to defend yourself from a burglar, but only if you’re physically superior or trained in self defense.
Otherwise, you must remain at their mercy and not use an equalizing force like a firearm...
got it.
Excellent!
“Assaulting” burglars is illegal in the UK, isn’t it?
So, when does Mr. Corti get out of prison?
“..after a judge told him he ‘got what he deserved.’”
Has any judge uttered those words in an English court within the past decade?
His Honour is welcome to his opinion, of course, but in dissent I humbly suggest that McCalium only got a tithe of what he deserved.
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. According to these beholding eyes, that's some beautiful picture.
Good job old fella.
No, it isn’t.
You’re allowed to use reasonable force to defend yourself.
Precisely what is reasonable can sometimes be the subject of some dispute, and there have been some rather silly decisions on it at times, but using your fists against a man with a knife is well within the limits.
If Mr Corti had continued to beat McCalium senseless after he had put him down, he might have got in trouble.
Do editors not do their jobs anymore?
I believe Mr. Corti was on him so fast, that the perp was hollering “ya’ll quit.” It is always nice to see the perp get his butt stomped or shot.
No, that’s not the case.
A person is allowed to use ‘reasonable force’ in self defence. If you believe yourself or another person to be at risk of death or serious injury, even deadly force is reasonable.
Some people have got into serious trouble because the courts have decided the force used was not reasonable. In most cases, if you look at all the facts of the case, you can discover why that decision was made and there is some sense to it.
You do not have the right to use deadly force in the UK unless you have reasonable grounds to believe you or another person is at risk of death or serious injury. You do not have the right to do so merely in defence of property.
McCalium is still far too pretty in that mug shot picture. A couple of hooks is a good start, but a better ending would have been him sticking that blade up McCalium’s...I mean, where the sun don’t shine.
Jailbirds don't rate an honorific title.
Defense of property is not a justification for the use of deadly force here, either, unless you’re in the state of Texas... :)
But, here, it IS “reasonable” to assume that if someone is in your house they are a deadly threat to you or your family.
Again, my point was that those who don’t have the ability to defend themselves as this old codger, God bless him, has,
are at the mercy of criminals because of the anti-selfdefense laws of the UK.
Lol!
Great pic!
I love a happy ending.
As this is the UK, I’m surprised that Mr. Corti isn’t facing charges......
Ahhh, sweet Justice !!!!
