Sen. Olympia Snowe says a government-run health insurance plan that would take effect if the private insurance market fails to deliver affordable coverage could bridge the partisan divide that threatens to derail President Barack Obama's efforts to reform the system.
The Maine Republican says she's working with Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York to establish that kind of a framework in the bill expected to emerge next month from the Senate Finance Committee.
Snowe says it would be unfair to include a government-run health insurance option that would take effect immediately because the public plan would have significant price advantages.
Snowe is seen as a key swing vote on health care. She was the committee's only Republican who declined to go on record as opposing the public option.

Hawk that Lugar !
BUMP!
I feel so badly for John McKernan!
Well, color me surprised, not!
We need a third party. That’s the only way to get these clowns to listen to us.
is Ms Snowe planning to give up her "gold plated" health care
and accept the one she wishes to mandate for us.I think not
Hey Olympia and Susie - how’s that stimulus you voted for workin’ out?
If people in Maine, or any other state, think socialized health care is the optimal way to go they should put it into place in their state and let us know how it works.
I suspect half the population of that state will emigrate, quickly.
Reason enough to throw her out next chance you get!
I will never identify as a Republican as long as they let liberal morons like Snowe achieve power.
here again comes RINO Snowe (and probably Collins) to further force socialism down the people’s throats
