US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Wednesday he does not believe that one single Iranian diplomat has accepted invitations to July 4 events at US embassies worldwide.

In embassy communities, it’s the practice for a given mission to invite all the other missions in town plus the big shots from the local foreign ministry for the National Day Reception. In Saudi Arabia, we celebrated our on Presidents’ Day because of the heat on 4 Jul. In Havana I lived two blocks from the Iranian embassy. I don’t remember any of them ever showing up at the Chief of Mission’s Residence in Siboney. Cubans fight for invites so they can come out and fill their stomachs (and probably their pockets) with little sandwiches and cookies. Routinely, the U.S. Mission in Havana invites members of the clergy to rub elbows with the Foreign Ministry biggies.
