Third Officer Shot By Illegal Alien In Sancutary City

Last Updated: Mon, 06/29/2009 - 3:52pm

A third law enforcement officer in one of the nation’s biggest sanctuary cities has been shot by an illegal immigrant who was protected by a don’t-ask-don’t-tell immigration policy during previous police encounters.

The Houston Police Department’s longtime rule prohibiting officers from questioning suspects about immigration status has cost the department dearly in the last few years. Two officers have been murdered and one shot in the face by illegal immigrants with previous records.

The latest shooting occurred just last week when an illegal alien from Mexico killed an undercover police officer during a sting operation. The illegal immigrant (Roberto Pedroza Carrillo) had been deported about a decade ago and ticketed by Houston police at least four times since 2002, most recently in November, according to a news report.

Last month another Houston officer was shot in the face by an illegal immigrant drug lord while attempting to serve a narcotics warrant at a house. The illegal alien from El Salvador had been arrested five times for possession or delivery of drugs, including three times after an immigration judge granted him voluntary departure in 2001.

In 2007 Houston officer Rodney Johnson was murdered during a routine traffic stop by a Mexican illegal that had been deported in 2004 for molesting a child and subsequently arrested for driving intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and failing to stop and provide information after an automobile accident. The illegal alien, Juan Quintero, shot Officer Johnson four times in the back of the head with a 9 millimeter handgun hidden in the waistband of his pants.

Even before this month’s murder, the Houston Police Officer’s Union called on city leaders to reverse the department’s 17-year-old don’t-ask-don’t-tell immigration measure because it had led to the brutal shootings of two officers. Both the mayor and the police chief refuse to change the sanctuary policy because they consider it crucial to policing city neighborhoods.

Texas has several major sanctuary cities—including Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, Dallas and San Antonio—that forbid law enforcement agencies from asking suspects about their immigration status. Houston, the state’s largest city, is estimated to have nearly half a million illegal immigrants who will remain protected under the law.

Many police departments nationwide also have similar measures and Judicial Watch has sued several—including Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago and the District of Columbia—for not complying with federal immigration law. In many instances, these police departments have released violent illegal immigrants that have gone on to commit atrocious crimes.

The combination of sadness and rage that I feel over this is monumental, yet it's a feeling that I know we all will be experiencing more and more over the coming years.

I agree with you big time. When we had kids, we moved out of Houston to an undisclosed rural area. I have a lot of respect for the HPD officers that have to deal with the legions of illegals in the city while our federal govt sits on their hands. There is no border. The sanctuary cities are safe havens for the violent drug dealers. Kind of like gun free zones are nothing but target rich environments. And at the same time, our feds and the media is surprised at the serious arming up by the US citizens. Captain Obvious event here.

Two people are primarily responsible for the deaths of several police officers. The mayor of Houston, Bill White, who has aspirations for higher office. The police chief, Harold Hurtt, who is trying to get a better job somewhere else. These two have conspired to let illegals run free in Houston regardless of their criminal activity. While whining that Houston is not a sanctuary city they have made it so by the lack of law enforcement and special treatment of illegals.

To these people lives, including those of police officers, should not stand in the way of political ambitions. The sooner we see the end of these two the better for the community.

You are exactly right! They both have sold their souls long ago. The need to be removed from their positions in this city.

Sanctuary cities aren’t legal. Federal law takes precedence over local law. Maybe the Houston police should bring a lawsuit.

As an ICE/DRO supervisor from CA, I can honestly tell you that we are simply overwhelmed with the amount of criminal aliens and procedural requirements that go along with them. In our small sub-office, with a staff of no more than 6 agents per shift (leave, training, details, etc. greatly reduce our staff), we have been processing and moving 80 to 100 criminal aliens per day. 98 percent are aliens that are arrested by other law enforcement agencies for other crimes and 2 percent are from Fugitive Operations.
In addition to normal processing and transportation requirements, many of these aliens have medical problems which we must provide first rate medical care for (thanks ACLU!). In fact, we make daily trips to hospital emergency rooms and pharmacies to provide health care and medication for these criminal aliens. How’s that for service?
We also have to accommodate attorney visits for the aliens which makes for very long days.
So, while we would like to spend more time apprehending and removing illegal aliens, we are forced (lawsuits against ICE are plentiful) to provide a “safer and more humane detention environment” for our detained aliens. They call it Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) - look it up.
My only hope is that some day, citizens will actually realize how difficult it is to remove illegal aliens with the ACLU and other illegal immigrants’ rights groups protecting them at every opportunity. It doesn’t help when pro-sanctuary elected officials (Boxer, Feinstein, Newsom, Villaraigosa, etc.) and supposed DHS leaders (Napolitano) undermine respect for our immigration laws by refusing to enforce them.
All I can say is that we are doing the best we can!
