KEYSER, W.Va. More than two years since leaving her prison cell, the woman who became the grinning face of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal spends most of her days confined to the four walls of her home.
Former Army reservist Lynndie England hasn't landed a job in numerous tries: When one restaurant manager considered hiring her, other employees threatened to quit.
She doesn't like to travel: Strangers point and whisper, "That's her!"
In fact, she doesn't leave the house much at all, limiting her outings mostly to grocery runs.

So, you’ll give her a job?
As she is responsible for her actions she is equally responsible for the consequences of those actions. I don’t hold any hatred for her but I also have no sympathy for her. She brought these troubles she’s going through on herself.
Meanwhile, how many of those restaurant workers who threatened to quit if Lynndie England were hired as well the others shunning her, are sobbing over pedophile Michael Jackson?
I agree.
Yeah, well lots of folks need a job and are having trouble.
Speaking personally, I am disgusted that Lynndie England received so much as a reprimand, far less gaol time. I do not view what she did as being a crime. Abu Ghraib is not a kindergarten and the scroats that she was put in charge of guarding were not Franciscan Monks. Abu Ghraib is a prison for dangerous felons, and these dangerous felons were terrorists and killers.
Goodness me. It is truly unbelievable that we put men and women in Harm’s Way and expect them to behave with their very best manners to our sworn enemies — the very same sworn enemies who would quite happily torture our soldiers and civilians alike, and saw off their heads with dull rusty knives on television???
What, are we all nuts?!! Is war to be fought gently and with kindness, then?
Gilbert and Sullivan prophetically foresaw this day, with their caricature “Sir Joseph Porter KCB” — except they were only kidding! The lunatics are surely in charge of the asylum when “HMS Pinafore” resembles a documentary more than a comedy.
I hear you. Unfotunately, she did something that damaged the national psyche, which makes it tough for her to walk away from her misdeeds. You can say the same thing for Monica Lewinsky. What was her crime exactly? Technically, none. However, any chance of a normal life for her is over. She had a lapse in judgement which made her an international laughing stock. Its very sad and probably unfair, but there is no guarantee that life will be fair. Some people just end up cosmically hosed.
One final thought: How many other Americans (soldiers or otherwise) have been killed due to anger over her antics? We will never know, but I’m sure there were some.
Un(?)fortunately, the felony rap never goes away. She's not the only person facing that problem. How the heck is the ex-con supposed to get his life turned around when he can't get a job?
Her best bet would be to go somewhere other than Keyser, WV. That place is depressed and has been for years.
>> She doesn’t like to travel: Strangers point and whisper, “That’s her!”
Bull. I’d venture to say no one would recognize her if she weren’t in her home town.
“What a heartless bunch we here at FreeRepublic have become.”
Although a number of posters who followed you agreed with you I don’t.
I don’t see a heartless bunch or anybody spewing hate.
I see a bunch pointing out she is reaping what she sewed in the area she growed up in.
If she wants a fresh start she needs to move.
She is working under what the locals know of her before she joined the military and what they read about what she did while in the Army.
Many years ago, PJ O'Rourke (US writer, satirist) mourned the death of satire ... he observed that no satirical outrage he could think of (and he was quite good at it) was safe from becoming reality.
You’re just figuring that out?
She has not asked for forgiveness. She doesn’t think she did anything wrong.
(grin!) I’m “discovering” PJ O’Rourke these days, having never read any of his work before. He’s brilliant!
Imagine what General George Patton would have done if he were in charge of Abu Ghraib. “Underpants-on-the-head” and “Naked pyramids” don’t seem to be his style. He probably would have had them all shot while trying to escape instead. He probably would even have left the main gate unlocked.
A much more sensible approach.
The real problem is human nature of making her the scape goat. What went on in Irak was none of her doing, she was at the total bottom of the pecking order. She was just there and too dumb to defend herself. None of the non-coms or officers that put their heads together and approved all that action caught any time, did they? Nope, they have a dumb ol country girl from West Virgina to heap the blame on. As far as the military and its tarnished reputation, did they do anything to the jerks that took the pictures and sent them all over the world...........eh? From previous posts here, it sounded like ol Lynndie joined up in the military to try to get away from her environment and get some education. Instead, she got caught up in the Army’s mess. I dont think she had any part in making any of those decisions, she just got taken for the ride.
Just sayin.............
Well said.
Call Congress. They are always looking for interns with no morals and no scruples.
My own personal opinion is that she was one of the few who took a fall for those at the top who may have knowne what was going on.
And I agree with your sentiment: “Is war to be fought gently and with kindness, then?”
If it is, then bring em all home!
