Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller. -President Obama (healthcare town hall meeting, June 24, 2009)
Like so many of his recently passed multibillion dollar programs, (Stimulus bill, Omnibus bill, etc.), it seems as though President Obama is off to the races regarding the passage of a universal healthcare bill. Although a universal healthcare concept might sound wonderful to many Americans, it is not a new idea. There are numerous nations that already provide socialized medicine and their programs are far from stellar. Among other problems, they suffer from budget crunches that result in rationed (therefore inferior) medical care, which, in turn, often result in unwarranted surgical procrastinations by doctors.
President Obama, forever the pragmatic one, may have been discussing healthcare for the terminally ill and the elderly, when he said, "Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller," but why stop with the terminally ill and the old?
If everyone in need of surgery will be forced into long waiting lines, then, should not all Americans in need of surgery be entitled to a piece of President Obama's "painkiller healthcare?" We need to tell the President that his universal healthcare bill must include a never-ending renewable painkiller prescription for all Americans awaiting surgery. In fact, since life can be so difficult and our President so compassionate, why not make painkillers a part of the President's wellness initiative?
The answer, of course, is that painkillers can be, among other things, addicting, damaging to the central nervous system, and dangerous to the heart.

Maybe most of us be taking pain killers because there will be a shortage of surgeons..
I find the continuously repeated arguments over government-controlled health care boring. It is quite obvious what would happen in such a case.
Let’s divide the peeps up into three groups.
1. Those presently without health insurance, perhaps 20% of the population. They receive health care at perhaps 40% of the maximum our society can provide, technically speaking. They would be better off in many other countries than here. If federal health care comes in their health care results will jump to perhaps 75%.
2. Those presently with decent health insurance, perhaps 75% of the people. Normal folks. They presently get health care at perhaps 85% to 90% of the theoretical maximum. When Obama’s plan kicks in, they health care results will drop to the same as group 1, 75%.
3. The business, media and political elite, perhaps 5% of the people. They presently get close to 100% results (witness Steve Jobs apparently cutting in line for a kidney recently). They will continue to receive the same if the gov takes over health care, as indeed they do in all other countries where the government runs things and theoretically provides identical care for all.
Net result. A relatively small number of people will get significantly better health care. Most people will have health care slightly to moderately less effective. The few at the top will continue to get the best possible.
The above prediction ignorres the fairly obvious fact that the theoretical maximum of health care will be lower under government care than it would be if we continued to be mostly more or less free market.
“Maybe most of us be taking pain killers because there will be a shortage of surgeons”
Yeah, there will be a shortage of surgeons for sure. The best and brightest will establish “Resort Hospitals” off-shore in the Caribbean or perhaps Mexico, Belie, etc. Those Americans and Canadians (don't forget, Canadians will no longer be able to come to the U.S. for critical care)with the means will fly to these special locations for their serious surgical needs. The rest of us will be issued a morphine pump at our local government medical clinic.
It is my understanding that this type of outsourcing is picking up momentum..
Harold Witkov:Oh really?
... painkillers can be, among other things, addicting, damaging to the central nervous system, and dangerous to the heart.
Or did he get that info from the DEA's gubmint website.
#1 Neither Uhbama or his family or our elected officials in congress would have to abide by the RULES of the national healthcare plan.
Are we still living in AMERICA?
#2 The members of the labor unions would be exempt from having to pay taxes on their health care benefits while ALL OF THE REST OF US , at least those not attached to a labor union, WOULD HAVE TO PAY THOSE TAXES!
Again, I ask IS THIS AMERICA WE ARE LIVING IN...THAT SUCH AN UNFAIR TAX SYSTEM WOULD GO INTO EFFECT?
WE must get ALL of these JERKS out of our HEALTH CARE....LEAVE MEDICINE ALONE! Don't RUIN the BEST HEALTH CARE IN WORLD! KEEP YOUR GRUBBY, GREEDY GOVERNMENTAL FINGERS AWAY FROM 1/6 OF OUR ECONOMY, JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT TO CONTROL THE MONEY.
What American would EVER put up with the dynamics of the that that elitist shit plan above? Is UHBAMA a KING that he would exempt his family from the plan he wants to crash down upon us?se And our congress?
If those control freaks what to put us under a governmental run healh system, then they BY GOD should have to suffer under the same program...NO EXCEPTIONS!
He needs to be taken down a peg or two, his arrogance, his "I WON" creepy insecurity crap has got to go.
(Can you guys even imagine if President Bush had utter the words "I WON" in defense of his actions, over and over again when things got testy in the press room?)
We live in an upside down world...when you cannot trust the press to be honest watchdogs, you lose your country, slowly.
Michael Jackson's autopsy report?
Or did he get that info from the DEA's gubmint website.
