Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) on Sunday said the Senate needs more time to review the record of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor after new material surfaced from her time with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund.
“Just a day or so ago, we discovered that there are 300 or so boxes of additional material that has just been discovered from her time working with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund,” McConnell said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” “The committee needs to have access to that material and time to work through it so we know all the facts before we vote on a person who is up for a lifetime job,” McConnell said. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to take up the nomination on July 13. Republicans have complained bitterly about the timetable for considering the nomination. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is aiming for a floor vote before the Senate breaks in August.
Sotomayor served on the group’s board of directors from 1980 to 1992. Conservatives opposed to her nomination have seized on a 1981 memo signed by her and two other directors of the group, which is now called LatinoJustice PRLDEF. In it, the directors argued against reinstating the death penalty in New York state, making the case that capital punishment is racist because it is disproportionately imposed on minorities.
Being Hispanic is not a criteria for seating a Supreme Court Justice. More is being made about her race than her actual judicial record. Clearly, Sotomayor's the "Latino Grievances" nominee......every ruling from the bench will be ironclad to redress every latino grievance since time immemorial. Americans will be paying with our freedoms for those Frito Bandito commercials. The fact that Sotomayor----and her crowd----do not understand a democracy is based on three co-equal branches of government is grounds for showing her the road.
She has the same disdain for America and it’s citizenry as evidenced by Obama. When he talks about "judges with empathy," the following decisions are what Obama means. Obama says he wants an "empathetic" justice. Did Sotomayor ever "empathize" with a gun owner or a middle-class white woman? More likely her empathy is limited to to liberal Democarat victim groups and voting blocs Dems need for relection and campaign contributions. )

Nelson Castellanos was arrested in NYC outside his Harlem apartment, charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine. He was holding his keys and a white shopping bag containing about $10,000, mostly in $1 and $20 bills. That evening, pursuant to a warrant, DEA personnel searched his apartment and found over 1,200 grams of cocaine, six live rounds of ammunition, a .44 caliber revolver and incriminating notebooks. All this evidence was thrown out by District Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor on the grounds that the DEA agents had not provided the magistrate with probable cause to search Castellanos's apartment.

NEWS ITEM REFERENCE Sen John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Sonia Sotomayor should explain whether she intends to be a justice "for all of us, or just for some of us," at July 13 Senate Judiciary Committee hearings......and whether she believes in colorblind justice. In 2001, she said a "wise Latina" would reach better decisions than a white man...... Cornyn said it suggests a judicial philosophy that suggests a judge is better qualified or more likely to reach better legal decisions because of sex, race or ethnicity....."I simply do not understand that contention, and I would like to ask her about it," Cornyn said. June 05, 2009 (CNSNews.com) – The Judicial Confirmation Network (JCN) says Judge Sonia Sotomayor failed to disclose to the Senate Judiciary Committee a controversial document arguing that the death penalty is “racist” and a violation of the present “humanist” thinking of society.
The 1981 memo, they say, should have been disclosed as required under Question 12 (b) of the questionnaire that the Supreme Court nominee turned in Thursday. Question 12(b) requires a nominee to "(s)upply four (4) copies of any reports, memoranda, or policy statements you prepared or contributed to the preparation of on behalf of any bar association, committee, conference, or organization of which you were or are a member or in which you have participated."
JCN Counsel Wendy Long sent a letter Friday to Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and members of the committee arguing that Sotomayor had not properly complied with this requirement because she had not submitted the 1981 memo on capital punishment.
“It is . . . clear that (Sotomayor) has omitted controversial material from her past in which she asserts that '[c]apital punishment is associated with evident racism in our society' and advocated public opposition to restoring the death penalty in New York state,” Long wrote to the committee. REFERENCE Judge Cabranes then-ruled that Sotomayor’s opinion failed to address the constitutional issues of the case, saying the majority had ignored the facts of the case as well. “It did so, moreover, in an opinion that lacks a clear statement of either the claims raised by the plaintiffs or the issues on appeal. Indeed, the opinion contains no reference whatsoever to the constitutional claims at the core of this case,” the judge criticized. “This Court has failed to grapple with the questions of exceptional importance raised in this appeal,” Judge Cabranes concluded.
