BARACK Obama has expressed opposition to a provision that would impose trade penalties on countries that did not accept limits on global warming pollution. Obama has told a small group of reporters at the White House that, at a time when the global economy is still deep in recession, he thought "we have to be very careful about sending any protectionist signals out there", The New York Times reported.
"I think there may be other ways of doing it than with a tariff approach," the president was quoted by the paper as saying.
On Friday. the US House of Representatives narrowly passed legislation to limit pollution blamed for global warming, handing Obama a hard-fought major victory.
By a 219-212 margin, lawmakers voted for the first time in US history to limit heat-trapping carbon emissions and shift the US economy to cleaner energy in a move backers said will create jobs and restore Washington's shaky leadership on climate change ahead of global talks set for December.
The Senate is still to vote on the measure.
Obama, hoping to build momentum in the Senate after the narrow victory in the House, delayed the start of a Sunday golf game to speak to a small group of reporters in the Oval Office, The Times said.
He acknowledged that the initial targets for reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases set by the House bill were quite modest and would probably not satisfy the governments of other countries or many environmental groups, the report said.
But he said he hoped to build on those early targets in fashioning a more robust program in the future as part of his administration's efforts to move the nation from an economy based on fossil fuels toward one built on renewable energy sources.

Placing the US under the taxing authority of the UN via cap and trade is fatal for the US...period...and represents irrevocable surrender of its’ destiny to transnational interests...period. O is not the least concerned about the matter as it is his transnational role to place the US as a puzzle piece into a picture evolving with the rudest and uncertain of directions. Oath of office is irrelevant.
“But he said he hoped to build on those early targets in fashioning a more robust program in the future as part of his administration’s efforts to move the nation from an economy based on fossil fuels toward one built on renewable energy sources.”
It’s only going to get worse - if that can be believed. (I can believe it but am finding it impossible to convince the still O supporting Dems I know).
Another way of protecting US Industry other than tariffs? Pray tell?
Or..
He had not intention of protecting it because he believes it should all be done in China, just like new coal plants.
I'm so impressed with his dedication.
It seems all Obama does is talk to reporters and play Golf.
WE do not have 50 years for alternative energy realistically to be developed and implemented. All the trillions have gone to banks re the derivative crisis and nothing has gone to energy development which must be with conventional energy with a very slow phasing in of alternative energy. The green energy ventures anticipated are small and cannot begin to cope with the massive unemployment occurring. Congress and EPA and environmental spheres are strangling even maintanence of our energy needs.
While there is some Congressional interest in advancing nuclear projects, the Dims have pulled funding and progression toward nuclear waste disposal in deep salt mines. Without an established facility for nuclear waste disposal for any new nuclear plant, no project under the rules established can go forward. Nuclear energy is dead from the start with this monkey wrench. The funds for the nuclear waste storage program were part of the $17 billion O found to cut out of the multitrillion budget.
Thanks for the additional factoids.
“BARACK Obama has expressed opposition to a provision that would impose trade penalties on countries that did not accept limits on global warming pollution.”
I actually thought this meant that countries like China and India who don’t want to be part of this folly will not be punished for destroying the earth via globull warming.
