Obama Warns Against Trade Penalties in Energy Bill
New York Times ^ | June 28, 2009 | John M. Broder

Posted on 06/28/2009 12:45:50 PM PDT by reaganaut1

A day after strongly praising energy legislation passed by the House, President Obama on Sunday spoke out against a provision in the bill that would impose trade penalties on countries that do not accept global-warming pollution limits.

At a time when much of the world is mired in recession, Mr. Obama said, “We have to be careful about sending any protectionist signals.”

He said that certain energy-intensive American industries — like steel, aluminum, paper and glass — had legitimate concerns about competition from developing nations and that he would seek to level the playing field in international negotiations.

But he warned that trade sanctions that are based on the extent to which other countries curb carbon dioxide emissions might be illegal and counterproductive.

“I don’t know if tariffs are the way,” he said.

The president, speaking to a small group of reporters in an interview in the Oval Office, acknowledged that the initial targets for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions set by the legislation, which narrowly cleared the House on Friday night, were quite modest and that they would likely not satisfy many other governments or environmental campaigners. He said he hoped he would be able to build upon the early targets to fashion a more robust program in the future.

...

Mr. Obama had few words of comfort for those who may have taken a political risk by voting for the House climate change bill, and no threats for the 44 House Democrats who defied their leadership to oppose it.

“Those 44 Democrats are sensitive to the immediate political climate of uncertainty around this issue and they have to run every two years,” he said. Many of them represent districts that rely heavily on coal for power generation or that are home to industries vulnerable to international competition.

Haha. Someone put in a poison pill either intentionally or unintentionally and the demo leadership missed it.

Oh so we unilaterally hobble US industry - then rule out hardball with trade adversaries.

Brilliant.

It's not a poison pill ~ it's what the Democrats intend to have happen ~ one of their little friends in the UN probably wrote it up for them.

As I recall the last time a big trade war erupted in a recession it turned into the Roosevelt Great Depression.

FR didn’t miss it!

I read on more than a coupla threads that this was in there. I think it’s supposed to minimize job losses by preventing said jobs from moving to countries w/out retrix on carbon emits [india/china for now].

So even the dems know it’ll cost jobs... or whoever put that piece into the bill knew...

Hussein is lying like a dollar watch. HE will do ANYTHING to make his union donors happy. Look for prices to skyrocket to an even higher level than the law itself would cause.

We can trust; their will be a price to pay. Obama just tying to figure out what 'poundage' of flesh he wants to take. . .and letting them squirm while he ponders.

Someone bookmark this. In two days he will say he is ALL for global taxation of everything.

“global-warming pollution limits”

Oh yeah, obozo imposes them upon us but don’t impose them on anyone else. it might ruin his warm fuzzies given to all the other countries.

Reject the tired ideas of the past! Embrace the global economy! Think of all the profits to be made! Our flag is no longer the Stars and Stripes, but the flag of the dollar sign, or maybe the Jolly Roger.
