(AP) AKRON, Ohio - Standing on brown earth on a flat field hundreds of yards from the nearest road, Don Carey is surrounded by tiny plants.
He walks along a three-quarter-acre plot in a desolate spot in this rural township in northeastern Portage County and looks at the thousands of tobacco plants he is growing.
Carey, 49, decided in April, when federal taxes on tobacco skyrocketed, to grow his own.

Thanks.
I suggested something similar when the new taxes were being discussed .. I don’t think your idea will work because it relies on many people somehow sprouting a green thumb out of the blue..
My “A” plan was to sublet the acreage and have the renters hire me to grow and tend their crops.
My “B” plan was to smuggle in finished tobacco from the Dominican Republic and other growing areas...
My “C” plan is to manufacture “dual use” products .. cigarette tubes and such that are also highly taxed and sell them as something else to avoid taxation...
And don’t PLANT in Miracle Grow! That time release stuff can really screw you if you have to flush your containers to rid the root system of too much sodium or you have nutrient lock out.
Everyone, including us non smokers, has already figured it out and it was posted here in FR so do be afraid to say it out loud, they most likely already know.
You can buy cured tobacco at a rate of less than $5 per carton. You can buy cured and flavored pipe tobacco at a rate of less than $10 per carton. You can buy brand name cartons of cigarettes for less that $15 a carton (http://www.okcig.com/Product_info.asp?ID=195).
Excellent. We know the allowed acreage. But what is the allowed number of plastic bags? :) Could BATF or FDA clarify, please?
This is really gonna tick-off the Political Elite.
I`ve picked tobacco worms, but only when it was to wet
to get the high-boy in the fields.
We sprayed 4 acres yesterday with Orthene, much easier
than hand picking worms. We have a few flea beatles also
The hard work comes when cuttin` time arrives, but sounds
like you know a bit about tobacco
The tax man will soon pay him a visit for daring to try to get around the state’s firm control on tobacco.
Ok, I was just saying that many have already figured it out, the stuff hit the streets about the day after the taxes went into place. I don’t smoke, but my grandson does and I let him know about it. :)
It's the reason for my tag-line!
“Do you have Prince Albert in a can?”
“Let him out!!”
Where and how?
Home beer brewing has been kinda a big thing for some years.
Hot and humid - think Cuba.

where my neighbor will sell you tobacco for personal use...and another neighbor sells hand raised “gourmet” tobacco....this has been going on for at least three years that I know of....and BTW you have to cut the big stems out if you want clean yellow leaf for cigs....pipe guys do a different treatment and add stuff like maybe apple slices....I quit smoking five years ago, but I’ve got to say I still really like the smell of pipe tobacco.
