On closer examination, it appears they dug holes, set cheap, brittle Chinese steel (the kind WE'RE getting !) and poured a cement base as an anchor.

The Wal-Mart aisles will be widening even more this year.

Check out the smoggy haze in the background of the photos.

Construction crew will be exicuted.

How did it manage to come down without crumbling to pieces or breaking any windows?

it looks like the foundation was never tied to the structure

someone thought the load would anchor the structure ... would be interesting in an earthquake or windstorm

"How did it manage to come down without crumbling to pieces or breaking any windows?"

Scripture teaches about building on sand .... down is down .. whether intact or in pieces.

That is, however, a very good question.

Perhaps we're being 'Shanghai'd' and this is really a "Return of Godzilla" set.(?)

“How did it manage to come down without crumbling to pieces or breaking any windows?”

I agree...something freaky about the pics. It looks as though the building was gently laid on the ground.

This might have been a slow mover .... gently tipping and slowly laying down on it's back.

If the soil is soft enough, and sandy .. I'd think the principle of the balanced salt shaker might be in play.

Shanghai is built on a river delta, that is just morning fog. The smog you are refering to is more visable during the afternoon. You can tell the difference by it’s brownish color.

Construction crew will be exicuted.

No they won't. The crew belong to a wealthy group of businessmen well connected to government officials. The family will be paid 10,000 yuan (~1000 USD). A suitable "natural" excuse will be identified and the machine will keep turning uninterrupted.

Perhaps unreinforced tubular caissons were specified. They mave have been driven piles but I think they would not have with stood the stress of driving.

Very close magnified view of the ends reveals that they are at varying distance from the foundation grade beam plane and that thy are literally broken off. That seems to indicate they were at a sufficient depth to prevent overturn but having no tensile strength literally pulled apart when a bending force was applied.

Being tubular, there was not much room for reinforcing steel, but the complete absence allowed the failure.

1) In photos 2 & 3, are those the pilings? And are they simply nailed into the mud underneath?!?!?!

2) In photo 1, in the background is that Shanghai’s air pollution? Or summer humidity? Or both?

>>> those are some pretty small pilings ... I thought it was piping <<<<

Same thought here. And it looks as if they’re simply nailed into the mud “foundation”.

Very close magnified view of the ends reveals that they are at varying distance from the foundation grade beam plane and that thy are literally broken off. A portion remains in the ground. That seems to indicate they were at a sufficient depth to prevent overturn but having no tensile strength literally pulled apart when a bending force was applied by the wind.
