CLEVELAND Investigators said this afternoon that several hundred gallons of what appears to be a type of cooking oil pouring out of a sewer pipe has killed or disabled hundreds of gulls on the Cuyahoga River.
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District had called the Ohio EPA on Wednesday to report that the substance was pouring into the river out of a storm sewer near the Kingsbury Run tributary, EPA officials said.
Sewer workers were using an oil/trash containment boom to contain and collect the oil, but at some point the oil got out from under the boom and into the river, EPA spokesman Mike Settles said in an e-mail.

Just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Cuyahoga catching on fire. Oh yeah, it's cooking oil, so let's interrogate the folks who run the steel mill. I also like the video at the link where they show some dead birds along with a ton of other solid matter floating around.

Vegetable oil is used in a lot of industrial processes as a more environmental alternative. Back when I was in plastics we had some presses that used it.

And we’re worried about gulls kicking off because? To me it’s about the same as saying several hundred rats died because of a rat plague.

That’s the best part of the article...the Ohio Department of Wildlife was contacted to help the gulls. They decided it would be better to just euthanize the gulls...since they also have a program in place to destroy gull eggs and control the population.

It could be rapeseed (Canola) oil used as an industrial lubricant.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if they were controlling the gull population by spraying their eggs with vegetable oil like they do with swans and other pest birds.

"cooking oil pouring out of a sewer pipe has killed or disabled hundreds of gulls on the Cuyahoga River." I wonder where I could buy some of this stuff?

Gulls are rats with wings. You call a half million and never make a dent in their population.

And were worried about gulls kicking off because? They are certainly not an endangered species along Lake Erie. Did you see the ones in S America that are starting to chomp on the whales when they surface?
