Turkey has urged France and Germany to back its bid to join the EU, rejecting calls for a special partnership rather than full membership.
"We will never give up," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters in Brussels.
Turkey's EU accession talks are going at a glacial pace and risk suspension if Ankara fails to open its ports and airports to Cyprus this year.
France and Germany want to give Turkey a "privileged partnership" with the EU.
But Mr Erdogan insisted "our goal is full membership".
He also said it was "populist and wrong" to use Turkey's bid as an election issue.
Some right-wing parties opposed to Turkey's bid made gains in the recent European Parliament elections.
Slow progress
The BBC's Oana Lungescu says both opposition inside the EU and insufficient democratic reforms in Turkey are hampering its bid.
Next week will see a small step forward, when Turkey is due to start talks on taxation, one of the 35 areas where it is negotiating EU entry terms.
Turkish diplomats argue that their country is of strategic importance to Europe and that its eventual accession would send a positive signal to the whole Muslim world.
So far, Turkey has opened talks on 10 out of the 35 "negotiation chapters" in the accession process, which started in October 2005.
But eight chapters have been frozen because of Ankara's refusal to open up its ports and airports to traffic from Cyprus, an EU member.
Turkey says it will not do this until the EU takes steps to end the Turkish Cypriot community's economic isolation.

Obviously the Turk should not, but on what do you base your theory?
fact is countries like Austria, France, Germany would never let turkey in believe me NEVER. and to gain membership you need the approval of every single EU country. So for example Austria stated years ago that even if all other countries would be pro turkey they would just simple held a domestic election about this (wich is binding for our government) “ or in other words so politicians can hand over the ass card to the public and say sorry turkey but you now we are forced to do what the voter says” (and about 80-90% of the people here would opposse this) and then simple veto it down. this is just a farce because the EU does not want turkey to be a member but they use “the membership card” to hold turkey on the short leash for their own personal gain.
Turkey could double down by not joining the EU, but instead forming the nucleus of a Middle East Common Market, with Iraq, already one of its top trading partners. This would make huge waves in the Middle East, because to join, a country would almost have to have transparency. And every country in the region would want to join.
This could have the prospect of a economic bloc similar in size to the EU.
And Turkey wins big time, because it would be the *portal* for trade between the MECM and the EU. Ironically, in the days of the Byzantine Empire, Turkey was the nexus to East-West trade. Now it would be between the North and the South.
Germany has had a long love affair with the Turk (hundreds of years) so I am surprised to hear you say that.
I guess there is loads of guilt about this in Austria and Germany. Or maybe - probably more accurately - having to live with them close up has changed their minds.

for the implementation of the common security and defence policy, to contribute to the

Member States shall undertake progressively to improve their military capabilities. The
Agency in the field of defence capabilities development, research, acquisition and
armaments (hereinafter referred to as “the European Defence Agency”) shall identify
operational requirements, shall promote measures to satisfy those requirements, shall
contribute to identifying and, where appropriate, implementing any measure needed to strengthen the industrial and technological base of the defence sector, shall participate in
defining a European capabilities and armaments policy, and shall assist the Council in
evaluating the improvement of military capabilities.
If a Member State is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other
Member States shall have towards it an obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in
their power,

1. The tasks referred to in Article 28 A(1), in the course of which the Union may use
civilian and military means, shall include joint disarmament operations, humanitarian and
rescue tasks, military advice and assistance tasks, conflict prevention and peace-keeping tasks,

stabilisation. All these tasks may contribute to the fight against terrorism, including by
supporting third countries in combating terrorism in their territories.....

ups my fault ;-) but to go back to topic. believe me turkey has the chance like a snowball in hell to join EU. it really doesn´t matter if they will be ever be able to fullfill all the demands of the EU the final result will be the same forever. the chance is ZERO. but i admit some one should finally tell them the truth after years of playing with them.

agreed. and given the fact that even the leftis are now slowly waking up in europe (this just means they are forced to if they ever want to gain only a view votes in europe again) and realise that the people in europe are beyond sick of muslim imigration it would be political suicide for a politician to be pro turkey in most european countries. btw. here in austria you would have to leave the country because of that ;-) dare to be pro EU membership for turkey(not even the left dares :-) and i guarantee you not only your politicial carrer (and your party) is finished but you would have to really leave the country because good luck living in autria after that. people would hate you for this.

Yup I know. But Austrians do not have them breathing down their necks like Greeks and Bulgarians etc. And - this is important— the US has sold their allies the Christians (Greeks, Assyrians, Armenians) down the river time and again in the pursuit of oil in the middle east.

Austria could not join NATO as a condition for the Soviets leaving the eastern part of the country.
