This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens that statements threatening violent action against the Government of Sudan have been posted on a jihadist website, following the death of a suspected Islamic extremist. The U.S. Embassy is concerned that there may be calls for violent action against the Government of Sudan and/or western interests during Friday prayers on June 26. For this reason, all U.S. Embassy personnel have been directed not to travel within Khartoum from 12 PM to 6 PM on this day.

The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that the verdict in the trial of individuals charged with the January 1, 2008 murder of two U.S. Embassy employees is scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Should the court announce guilty verdicts in this case on June 24, the reaction among the men’s supporters could include demonstrations at Embassy Khartoum facilities and/or other anti-American, anti-western actions. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the Khartoum North courthouse, located in downtown Khartoum, maintain a low profile, and increase vigilance.

The Department of State continues to warn against all travel to Sudan, particularly in the Darfur area, where violence between government forces, rebel factions, and various armed militias continues. American citizens who choose to travel to Sudan despite the existing Travel Warning, and those currently in Sudan, should review their security posture and take appropriate precautions. Americans living or traveling in Sudan are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate through the Department of State's Travel Registration website (http://travel.state.gov) so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Sudan. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the embassy or consulate to contact them in case of emergency.
