A hardline Iranian cleric called on Friday for the execution of leading rioters to teach a lesson to the thousands who have protested against the June 12 presidential election result.
I want the judiciary to ... punish leading rioters firmly and without showing any mercy to teach everyone a lesson, Ahmad Khatami told worshippers at Tehran University.
Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Experts, said the judiciary should charge the leading rioters as being mohareb or one who wages war against God.
They should be punished ruthlessly and savagely, he said. Under Iran's Islamic law, punishment for people convicted as mohareb is execution.
Mousavi's supporters plan to release thousands of balloons on Friday with the message: Neda you will always remain in our hearts, in memory of Neda Agha Soltan, the young woman killed last week who has become an icon of the demonstrations.
Khatami said Neda was killed by government opponents for propaganda purposes. By watching the film, any wise person can understand that rioters killed her, he said.
Britain's Times newspaper quoted Dr. Arash Hejazi, an Iranian who appeared on Internet videos helping Neda, as echoing opposition charges the 26-year-old music student was killed by a government militiaman.
She was just a person in the street who was against the injustice going on in her country, and for that she was murdered, he said.
Russia, which along with China congratulated Ahmadinejad on his re-election earlier this month, said on Friday it was seriously concerned by the use of force in Iran.
Mousavi said he was determined to keep challenging the election results despite pressure to stop.

If Obama just didn't know how bad it was, he should admit his lack of knowledge. Instead we get some poor excuse of not being seen as meddling, only to have Ahmadinejid scold him like a child for meddling.

Obama must be right at any cost. He said he would sit down and negotiate with Amadmanjihadi and damn it he will do anything it takes to make that a reality even if it means selling out the people of Iran to further Oppression and death. Slavery of people means little to Obama as long as he can show the world that he is all that really matters.

The people of Iran need M-16s now not support from talks by O Zero. They will never be free without arms. Right now they are hacking the protesters with axes. What a religion and O Zero wants to play nice with them and apologize for making them to nutty.. O Zero really does hate this country.
Should be quite impressive. There’s little to be gained by going in and blowing up some country’s army but if you can take out their top butchers with precision, you might even make some friends there.
Ahmad Khatami is not the same sort of “religious” leader you are used to.
