Although sharply divided along party lines, most Americans favor an overhaul of the health care system, but they are concerned that the quality of care will decrease significantly if government is allowed to run it.
While 73% of respondents believe the health care system needs a "complete overhaul" or "major changes," nearly one-half (47%) say they fear a government-run program would lead to deterioration in quality.
The IBD/TIPP Poll of 922 Americans in the first week of June points to a sharp divide along party lines: Eight of 10 Democrats believe the government should guarantee health insurance for all, while almost as many Republicans (72%) believe health care is not government's responsibility.
If the government were to run health care, 33% of Democrats believe the quality of care would improve significantly and another 34% believe it would not be affected one way or the other. On the other hand, 77% of Republicans anticipate a decline in quality.
Eighty-one percent of Democrats express confidence in President Obama's ability to reform the health care system in a way that will satisfy most Americans, while only 26% of Republicans believe so.
(Independents are almost equally divided on the issue, with 56% expressing confidence in the president's ability to do so, compared with 43% who do not.)

I think it’s true. Better run and managed and fair and uniform healthcare. I don’t think any of us would begrudge or withhold medical care, necessary and even preventive healthcare, from anyone.
But the gov’t run part is obviously a loser. Lets look at our wonderful gov’t run deals: the US Post Office, Social Security, Medicare ... FannieMae, FreddieMac, AIG, ... should I go on.
We need to fix these disasters in place now. Gov’t could make the playing field better with sound regulations over the insurance and medical provider industries. Maybe portability of insurance and some additional factors ... you know the old 1 law not 50 laws.
I guess the moral of the story is: If you get up there and chant a “Hope and Change” mantra for long enough, a majority of Americans will reach the conclusion that you know something about managing a health care system. I haven’t yet figured out how that dynamic functions, but evidently it does.
I almost cried this week when the “openly homosexual congressman”, Bahney Fwank came out and demanded that Fannie and Freddie make it easier for freeloaders with no income to get home loans. I thought we’ve already been down that road.
If Americans REALLY want lower cost health care there is one easy answer; make people responsible for paying a significant portion of their own health care. Do away $15 co-pays on office visits and prescription drugs. Do away with $50 out of pocket emergency room visits. Instead, put people on a plan that pays for everything over the first $3000-$4000 per year.
You will go to the doctor less, ask for fewer prescription drugs if there is a cheaper OTC drug, and have fewer unnecessary tests and procedures and prices WILL go down. Also, allow emergency rooms to turn away people who go there for the sniffles and a tender ankle and non-emergency incidents if they can’t pay.
Yeah,there’s a lot of good things to hopfully look forward to,governors and reps will be our first chance,but I think the illegal amnesty plan is part of a grand strategy,even before it passes,we will be flooded with illegals,who will vote a lot. Its a serious situation,but I am always hopful of a good outcome
This will cause a reduction in suing doctors (Doncha' love those tv ads about suing over medical crap?).
This will cause doctors to be able to stop paying obscene amounts in insurance costs.
This will allow doctors to reduce fees.
