Obama sent letter to Khamenei before the election, report says (Obama blows it)

Barack Obama sent a letter to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, before this month's disputed election calling for an improvement in relations, it was reported today.

According to the Washington Times, the US president sent the private letter in May setting out the prospect of "co-operation in regional and bilateral relations" and a resolution of the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme. The message was passed to the Iranian foreign ministry by the Swiss embassy, which represents US interests in Iran.

The White House did not deny the letter had been sent. A spokesman said yesterday: "As you know, we have indicated a willingness to talk for a long time and have sought to communicate with the Iranians in a variety of ways. We have made it clear that any real dialogue – multilateral or bilateral – needed to be authoritative.

I saw the press conference exhange with Major Garret. I thought Obama answered the question well, even though in my opinion he embelished the facts.

How is it, that just about everyone believed that he has not clearly articulated CONCERN for the protestors there.

To hear his answer you’d think that he was in another time zone, as his currect views were not made clear.

The second feeling I had was that we’re dealing with someone who is extremely stealth and probably with a thinly cloaked angry disposition.

I think Obama has been dealing with Khamenei before he got in the White House. The Iranians aren't going to drop their nuclear weapons project but they might agree secretly to better conceal it inside a “peaceful” nuclear power program. And to stop the Apocalyptic rhetoric. (This is what Clinton and Albright did in North Korea. When Bush took office he discovered Koreans were still making nukes.) Obama would have to agree to severe all ties with Israel and lift sanctions on Iran.
