Vietnam:

Southern region’s major H1N1 testing center halts tests

Last Updated: Friday, October 2, 2009 21:49:15 Vietnam (GMT+07)
http://www.thanhniennews.com/healthy/?catid=8&newsid=52840

Southern Vietnam’s main swine-flu testing facility suspended testing Thursday, said HCMC Health Department official Phan Van Nghiem, arguing that not much would change as tests could be performed elsewhere.

The Ho Chi Minh City department said Friday that test results from the city’s Tropical Diseases Hospital, Children’s Hospital No.1, and Children’s Hospital No.2 would now be officially recognized alongside those from the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute, previously recognized as the only swine flu test authority in the southern region.

Pasteur is now waiting for more funds from the Ministry of Health and must also complete all necessary bidding procedures to buy more influenza A (H1N1) virus biological reagents, the institute’s Director General Tran Ngoc Huu said in a note sent to 20 provincial and city health departments Wednesday.

In a telephone interview with Tuoi Tre, Nguyen Huy Nga, head of the ministry’s Preventive Health and Environment Department, said the institute had told the ministry about the suspension, saying that suppliers had refused to advance the testing agents as the institute was now in debt to them.

According to Huu, the debt for vaccines and biological reagents is now worth over VND4 billion (US$224,177). But he refused to name the suppliers and would not say how many samples were currently waiting for testing.

“Now they have to pay up before buying more,” Nga said, noting that even once the debt was paid the bidding process would still be required under regulations.

The ministry has provided the institute with VND1.5 billion (US$84,066) to buy more the testing agents, according to Huu, who added that it was still unknown when tests would be resumed as new supplies would not be available until the time-consuming bidding procedures were completed.

Conflicting opinions

Huu and Nga said the halt would not affect flu treatment in Vietnam much, as the health ministry had allowed hospitals to give patients suspected of being infected with H1N1 the antiviral drug Tamiflu without awaiting test results.

But not all officials from southern preventive health centers felt the same way.

Tests can help identified new outbreaks, allowing for better control of epidemics, said Cao Trong Nguong, director of the Dong Nai Province Preventive Health Center.

The suspension may have unexpected consequences as the disease continues to spread quickly through local communities, Nguong added.

The director of a provincial hospital who spoke on condition of anonymity said that although the facility was treating for H1N1 once patients showed swine flu symptoms, it would be difficult for doctors to re-diagnose problems if patients did not respond to proper swine-flu treatment.

The Da Nang Health Department, the central region’s sole influenza A (H1N1) testing center, also announced the suspension of all tests last month as it had also ran out of biological reagents to diagnose the virus.

Ly Ngoc Kinh, director general of the Medical Treatment Department at the Ministry of Health, had previously warned that Vietnam was about to exhaust its stock of testing agents.

While it awaits new supplies that will take at least two months to arrive, the Institute of Biotechnology is cooperating with the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City to develop locally-made reagents.

However, the locally produced materials won’t be introduced before January at the earliest.

Since the disease emerged in Vietnam in March, it has affected over 9,000 people nationwide, killing 16, the latest of which died Tuesday.

You might want to look at those studies numbers broken down by age.

I was only making an FYI statement as to the crushed garlic equaling Penicillin.

As far as I know it’s not used to treat the flu.

The last time I took Penicillin was for an abscessed tooth. Don’t know what else it’s used for.

I know when I was younger that the doctor would give you a pencillin shot in the behind for the flu .

I do know someone who got the pencillin shot in Feb for the flu.

I was wondering if anyone knew if some doctor’s still treat the H1N1 flu with pencillin ever ???

Three more Minnesotans die from H1N1 complications

By Jeremy Olson

Updated: 10/02/2009 01:10:39 PM CDT

jolson@pioneerpress.com

Three more Minnesotans have died from complications due to H1N1 influenza infections, the state health department reported Friday.

The deaths involved a woman in her 50s from Dakota County, a man in his 50s from Ramsey County, and a woman in her 40s from Watonwan County. All three had other health conditions that contributed to their deaths, which occurred in the past two weeks.

“For most people, the H1N1 flu is not severe,” said Dr. Sanne Magnan, state health commissioner. “However, it can still be very serious, especially for people with underlying health conditions. That’s why we continue to monitor this situation closely.”

Six Minnesotans have died — including two children — from H1N1-related complications since the new strain of influenza virus emerged this spring. The state also has reported 324 hospitalizations.

State health officials reminded people with fevers of 100 degrees or higher to stay at home from work or school to reduce the spread of the virus.

A vaccine for the H1N1 influenza strain will be available in Minnesota this fall and winter. The first 28,000 doses are arriving shortly, but are being reserved for the medical and emergency workers who interact with infected patients.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans tight end Anthony Hill was hospitalized this week after testing positive for swine flu.

Texans vice president of communications Tony Wyllie says Hill, a rookie, is the only player on the team believed to have swine flu and that other players are being monitored.

Hill, a fourth-round pick from North Carolina State, has spent two nights in the hospital. Coach Gary Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle, which first reported the ailment, that Hill could be released later Friday.

Houston hosts Oakland this Sunday.

Swine Flu Claims Terrebonne Woman
9:08AM

Health officials say she had a compromised immune system.
by Dave Adams

A Terrebonne woman dies of complications related to the H1N1 virus. Officials say Richelle Ross, 34 was admitted to the hospital September 19th with respiratory complications and passed away a week ago. Shannon Dames of the Deschutes County Health Department says if you have the flu right now in the county, there is a 99% chance it’s H1N1, but chances are very good you will recover. If you do contract the flu, her advice is to stay home to avoid infecting others.

I have twins that are at high risk for complications from any flu.

One of them has epilepsy, and the death rate for epileptics for H1N1 is twice that of normal flu.

I know they have an outbreak at my daughters school, and I’m trying to figure out if I need to homeschool them or what.

I appreciate the time dvdmom is taking to post the articles about H1N1.

I know you think the swineflu isn’t a big deal .

If your loved one died from the swineflu try telling everyone else it’s no big deal .

These nurses & doctor’s disagree with you ...

at allnurses.com regarding the Austin Medical Center with the triage tents outside...

This article is from Sept 22, 2009, on that day alone they had 200 positive H1N1 cases. A person who works there and he told me today that at least 17 ER nurses (including him) are sick with H1N1 and traveling nurses are now being brought in.

CDC reports nearly 1/3 of flu deaths related to secondary bacterial infection. If significant fever >3 days call your doctor.

You are completely out of your mind.

I have never advocated enforced vaccinations, ever ever ever. I refuse to get vaccinated myself and would never recommend vaccination to any of my clients. Those who post on this thread want information dissemination of what is happening with the flu, not forced dissemination of vaccines.

You’re just rabid and crazy and must not read what anyone actually says.

Mod - this guy is freaking rabid and keeps accusing people on this thread in a crazy way of stuff we didn’t say. Over and over. He’s like a biting insect. Refuses to stop.
