Nixon tapes, papers weigh in on fateful days

WASHINGTON -- With an air of desperation, a hunkered down White House hatched a plan to save Richard Nixon's presidency as the Watergate crisis began to consume it: Demonize the prosecutor in the eyes of lawmakers and the people.

The effort fell flat.

Hardball rhetoric was the order of the day in the Nixon White House, a collection of memos and tape recordings released Tuesday by the Nixon Presidential Library makes clear. This was so whether the president was willing the downfall of a Democratic "pipsqueak," criticizing his own vice president for playing tennis or pressing South Vietnam to accept a peace deal that would leave it open to the communist takeover that followed.

Nixon is heard on a muffled tape recording telling his special counsel that abortion is necessary in some cases - including instances of multiracial pregnancy.

Speaking to Charles Colson after the January 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, the president said: "I admit, there are times when abortions are necessary, I know that." He gave "a black and a white" as an example.

"Or rape," Colson offered. "Or rape," Nixon agreed.

35 + years and the WP can't let go...
I'm surprised they don't dig him up and scalp him all over again.

what is Nixon’s crime? Covering up for aides who were spying on Democrats?

Obama is already doing that, covering for his corrupt friends by firing the Inspector General who were investing him

If the WP could ressurect Nixon they would and they would try to get him impeached. They still pissed that Nixon loved America and resigned.

If there were any justice in the world, wordward and bernstein would be hounded until they commit a final, desperate act.

"I could destroy the tapes but that would be wrong"

Anyone believe that faced with that option, a democrat would ever come to that conclusion and take themselves out?

In the larger scheme of things, Watergate was a relatively minor scandal, at least by Washington standards.

Truth is the liberals had it in for Richard Nixon and were determine to get their “pay back” after Nixon went after their golden boy, Alger Hiss.

It was ALL ABOUT paybacks. Liberals never forgive. This is the part of history which is rarely told anymore.
