First Lady Michelle Obama wants you to eat your vegetables.
“Too many kids are consuming high-calorie food with low nutritional value,” Obama told a group of students from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington on Tuesday. The kids helped the first lady pick lettuce and peas that they had planted at the White House Kitchen Garden in April.
“We all have to eat vegetables every single day, every day,” Obama said.
Wearing orange jeans she knelt in the dirt and watched as the kids cut several varieties of lettuce. In front of half a dozen cameras Obama showed off the pleasure of eating raw sweet peas. “It tastes great doesn’t it, when the vegetables are fresh?” she said as she happily popped in a pea.
Obama said the first family is already more energetic thanks to the infusion of home grown fruits and vegetables in the White House diet.
According to assistant White House chef Sam Kass, the 1,100-square foot plot on the South Lawn of the White House grounds has produced 73-pounds of lettuce and 12-pounds of snap peas. The garden has also spawned kale, collard greens, chard, herbs and one slightly yellow cucumber. The rainstorms in Washington had not washed any of the vegetables away and puppy Bo had not eaten any….yet. “The rain has been beautiful,” Kass said.
Kass, White House pastry chef Bill Yoses and several “volunteers” oversee one big weeding a week. Kass has also started offering tours of the garden to school children twice a week.
After the digging, Obama and several children met in the cozy White House kitchen where they prepared a healthy meal of brown rice, baked chicken and freshly harvested snap peas. The other kids set the tables for the meal. “Today is the culmination of a lot of hard work,”
