CHICAGO (AP)Former Chicago Cubs star Ryne Sandberg says Sammy Sosa(notes) doesnt belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
I dont think so, Sandberg told ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago on Tuesday. Part of being in the Hall of Fame, they use the word integrity in describing a Hall of Famer, in the logo of the Hall of Fame, and I think there are going to be quite a few players that are not going to get in.
The New York Times last week reported that Sosa was one of 104 players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in an anonymous 2003 survey, while he was with the Cubs. A congressional committee is looking into the allegations.
Sosa and Mark McGwire captivated the nation with their 1998 battle to break Roger Maris season record of 61 homers. McGwire set the mark while Sosa finished with 66. He followed up by hitting 63, 50, 64, and 49 homers in his next four years, and hit 40 more in 2003, a season in which he was caught using a corked bat in front of his home crowd at Wrigley Field.
During a 2005 hearing before Congress, Sosa sat alongside Rafael Palmeiro, Jose Canseco and McGwire and testified: To be clear, I have never taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs. He said he had not broken the law in the U.S. or his native Dominican Republic.

If you would like to be on the ping list let me know.
This will be a medium volumn ping list during the baseball season and a low volumn ping list when all life stops in late October.
Must not have been as anonymous as they thought.
One thing I like about baseball, it’s HOF is very prestigious. You have to literally be the best of the best.
Yes, and not only that, but the 'integrity' part comes up often ... witness Pete Rose, one of the "best of the best" as you put it, but still shunted aside for HOF inclusion due to his gambling while active in MLB
...it is not the BaseBall Hall of Fame without PETE ROSE.
NONE of the Boys of Steroids belong in the Hall of Fame.
I’d like to step up to the plate and join the ping list
team too, skipper.
Thanks,

Please put me on the baseball ping list.
Agreed about Pete, but I think what EEE was alluding to is the "integrity" of the HOF candidate which makes it such a prestigious institution. Pete had/has a gambling addiction, which isn't necessarily a terrible thing, but that he gambled on games in which he was directly involved in as a participant .. that's a no-no, and the HOF doesn't take kindly to it.
These steroid era boys are gonna find out very soon what their actions cause to their reputation .. some already have ... McGwire, Clemens, Sosa, Bonds, Palmieri ... A-Rod up next ....
But then again, The Babe performed on beer and hot dogs .. not exactly 'performance enhancing' stuff by any means :) And Gaylord Perry kinda sorta cheated with an illegal pitch ... so what do I know ??? /laughs
Several thoughts here:
1. Sandberg’s interview is poignant because it was done on June 23, the 25th anniversary of “The Sandberg Game,” the game that probably put him in the Hall of Fame.
2. Sandberg is right about Sosa. Same with McGwire, Bonds and Palmiero. Those guys don’t belong in the Hall.
3. As my son pointed out, Rose belongs in the Hall before any of those other guys. While Rose bet on baseball, there is no showing that he acted in any way to tank games to win money. Anyone who knows Rose knows he always bet that his team would win. Still, he broke the rule and his penalty is just.
4. I do believe that eventually, Pete Rose will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Posthumously. He will not be permitted to make an acceptance speech.
Ryne Sandberg may be the classiest guy to ever be enshrined in Cooperstown.
Ryno is right in saying that anyone using performance-enhancing drugs, does not belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Rafael Paleiro, Roger Clemmons, and Jose Canseco do not belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame nor should they ever be elected in any kind of special election.
Pete Rose belongs in The Hall. When he will get in and if he will be above ground when he does is anybody’s guess.
It’s kind of interesting, following all of this. To me the main question: Were the rules of Major League baseball broken? Name the rule, show where and when they were caught, chapter and verse and let’s be done with it...then we can decide these HOF issues and the like...magritte
You are on the ping list.
Thanks. :)
Please include me.
Thanks, BG
This spring, my 20 year old son decided that for his college spring break, he and his dad should go to Cooperstown. How could I say no?
When you enter the Hall, there are three statues in the entry area.
Gehrig
Robinson
Clemente
I almost cried.
On our way home, we talked about what it meant to be in the Hall of Fame. Gehrig, Robinson and Clemente are what the Hall of Fame is about. Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, Palmiero; I don’t care about rules or numbers. We think they don’t belong in the Hall of Fame.
Pete Rose had (maybe still has) an addicton to gambling.
He was great to watch, put fannies in the seats, and it was a crushing blow to me and most when he was accused.
Th fact that he stonewalled, (LIED) for so many years indicates to me that he had a contempt for the game and the writers. If he had only said “mea culpa”, and I am sorry for allowing my addiction to get me in trouble, he would have been forgiven...But, no, he held to his story, a lie.
For this reason he should be forever banned from the Hall of Fame.
As for the rest..Sosa, Clemons et al, they were CHEATERS and should not even get on the ballot!
Thanks AW
Will be a good teammate.

‘NONE of the Boys of Steroids belong in the Hall of Fame.’
I concur. They can start an all drug hall of shame for Sosa, McGuire and Bonds.
