WJLA reporter on the scene just said at least one dead, lots of injured sitting on the rail bed.
Many still inside the cars.

There will be many fatalities. The image on CNN showed that the two front cars accordioned. The “top” car was just the outer shell of that car.

Let me guess, a driver was distracted because s/he was texting on a cell phone?
Something similar happened on the Boston MBTA a few months ago. A driver was texting, totally missed the red light signal and collided with another subway train.

1 dead after Metro train derailment, collision WASHINGTON - At least one person has died after a Metro Red Line train derailed and collided with another Metro train between the Takoma Park and Fort Totten stations, D.C. Fire and EMS officials say.
The six-car train was heading toward Shady Grove when it derailed and then collided with another train around 5 p.m. Monday near the Maryland-D.C. border.
D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter tells WTOP rescue crews are setting up for the "possibility of mass casualties."
Etter says there are some injuries.
Metro is advising that people avoid the Red Line for the rest of the day.
Trains are operating between Glenmont and Brookland and between Shady Grove and Brookland stations and from Glenmont to Takoma stations for the remainder of the day.
WTOP has a reporter en route to the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.
