Two points:
1. Technically, the mitvah is that the temple has to be on the mount. Doesn't say WHERE on the mount. And yes, there is plenty of room.
2. There is very good argument that the 1st Temple was a different location (my opinion).

***I agree. I first ran across this evidence in Hal Lindsey’s “A Prophetic Walk Through the Holy Land”. In 1989 there was a riot at the temple mount and 19 jews were killed by Palestinians because the jews were laying down the cornerstones of the foundation of the Temple of Solomon.
