Sen. Kit Bond: Iranians want the U.S. to get more involved

Demonstrations in the wake of Iran's presidential election are a sign that country's dissidents want the U.S. to get involved in the disputed contest, Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) asserted Monday.

Bond, the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, pushed back against President Obama's claim that the election is not a U.S. issue, and urged the administration to speak out more forcefully in favor of Iranian dissidents.

"We didn't have anything to do with this uprising; we're not trying to tell them who they should select," Bond said on CNBC Monday morning. "But when they have such obvious election fraud and the violence with which they are dealing with…the way they've done it is unacceptable."

"They want us, they are appealing to us to recognize it," We need to recognize the legitimate aspirations of the American people."

Republicans have criticized the Obama administration for a perceived passivity in their response to the Iranian elections.

The president, by contrast, has emphasized the need to not be seen as meddling in the outcome of the contest

"This is an opportunity where we think — I think, personally — the president should be speaking out much more clearly on behalf of the Iranian people," Bond said.

I'm confused by your headline. Are you saying that Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) is a Democrat?

Kit Bond is Republican Senator from Missouri. Not ranking member, but ranking minority member.

Yup... Where’s Jimmah Cahta when his so-called “election monitoring services” are needed?

(Recall he went to various 3rd world countries several years back to ensure that elections were fair & honest...)

What a total hypocrite!

He is the Ranking Member. The minority party’s top guy is the Ranking Member. The majority party’s top guy is the Chairman.

Kit Bond is a Republican.

You are absolutely right. My mistake.

Could the headline be changed to read "Republican" instead of "Dem"?

Thanks.

ehh...Maybe he was just keeping with the times. Where Republicans are the Democrats of old and Democrats are the Communists of old ... And the Republicans of old are extinct (although there have been some claimed sightings of the species in faraway regions of Alaska ...)

I saw a sign held by one of the protestors yesterday, asking that very question - “Where is Jimmy Carter?”

O has a particular interest in not demonizing Iran.

After all, it was President George W Bush who referred to the axis of EVIL as Iraq, Iran, and North Korea.

BUSH WAS RIGHT

I don't think the issue is that the freedom fighters in Iran expect us to send in troops. But they would at least like ObaMao to show as much courage in making a statement of support as did the President of France!!!!!!!!!

"They want us, they are appealing to us to recognize it," We need to recognize the legitimate aspirations of the American people."

Who did the transcript for this anyway, some third-grader?? Surely not a professional, way too many errors, not the least of which this one which makes no sense whatever! Leave aside the incorrect insertion of quotation marks afer it, Bond did not say, "We need to recognize the legitimate aspirations of the American people," he quite clearly (and obviously!!!) said, "... the legitimate aspirations of the IRANIAN people." Brudder!!!

Indeed, and as a result he will give us another smoke and mirror trick to make the masses think he’s on top of it.

Reader comment #3:
“0bama did speak out clearly. He said there is no difference between Mousavi and Ahmadinejad, a statement surely welcomed by those dying in the streets of Tehran.”

During one of President Dumbo's press massages, it was funny to hear him say he's not getting involved with Iran because I'madinnerjacket would love "to make it about the U.S. and Iran". Which was exactly the reason GW Bush refused to meet with the little troll about anything.

Doesn't the Organizer-in-Chief see the irony. Never mind, of course he doesn't.

0bama's Cairo speech took over for Carter in this instance.

So everything was on the up and up in Iran.

(/s) oppps almost left it out.
