Mousavi Accuses Obama of 'Misleading the World' Sunday, June 21, 2009 1:38 PM

Author and foreign policy expert Michael Ledeen has published a letter reportedly from the office of Mir Hossein Mousavi, in which the Iranian opposition leader criticizes President Barack Obama for saying Mousavi and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad are "two of a kind."

The letter, addressed to Obama, takes the president to task for the remark, calling it "a grave and deep insult, not just to Mr. Mousavi but especially against the judgment of the Iranian people, against our moral conviction and intelligence, especially those of the young generation that comprises a population of 31 million.

"It is a specially grave insult for those who are now fighting for democracy and freedom, and an unwarranted gift and even praise for [Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei, whose security forces are now killing peaceful Iranians in the streets of every major city in the country.

"Your statement misled the people of the world."

Reagan didn’t have any problems calling the Soviets what they were. If I were Pres., I would be making statements against Theocratic rule.

Other nations bash our form of republicanism all the time.

We can have an opinion.

President Bush's policy was to criticize Ahmadinejad and support the protesters. Ahmadinejad's response has been to criticize the US president. The protests have increased. Ahmadinejad's support has decreased. You appear to find Bush's policy had an effect of weakening Iranians' support for Ahmadinejad, increasing protests against him and the clerical regime, or both. I doubt it. More likely the reasons are simply thuggery, authoritarianism, theocracy too harsh even for many Muslims, and obvious election fraud with a bad economy in the background. However, your approach does have the virtue of looking at things empirically.

All I can do in response is present the facts.

You appear to find Bush's policy had an effect of weakening Iranians' support for Ahmadinejad, increasing protests against him and the clerical regime, or both. I doubt it.

No in my last post as one can see above in bold, I took the approach to simply lay out the facts and let one come to their own conclusion.

More likely the reasons are simply thuggery, authoritarianism, theocracy too harsh even for many Muslims, and obvious election fraud with a bad economy in the background.

...and at the very least a U.S. president supporting the Iranian people and their rejection of the tyrant Ahmadinejad can't hurt and may help.

Do you still think that a U.S. President who vocally supports the Iranian people and their defense of their unalienable rights, will cause the Iranian people to then reject that U.S. President, reject their unalienable rights and switch their support back over to the tyrant Ahmadinejad?

I don't.

However, your approach does have the virtue of looking at things empirically.

No, human nature and experience lead me to my point-of-view. Your approach appears at least from your posts to be derived from nothing specifically stated.

Our Muslim mouse plays 24/7.
He giggled and tittered through his Friday night stand up routine for the media ,
went for an ice cream cone on Saturday
and played golf again today ...which makes 7 golf Sundays out of the past eight.
The guy is on permanent Spring Break and can’t be bothered with watershed events in the Mideast.
The media treated the First Fruit Fly like a hero because he dispatched a fellow insect.
The real hero was Neda.
Guess Barry will have to kill a mosquito tomorrow to take back the headlines.

The point is not to support Mousavi. It is to support the people of Iran who are protesting at great risk because their already terribly limited vote of pre-selected candidtes was stolen.

One of the fundamentals of the Iranian state is hostility toward the West in general and the US and UK in particular. Whatever the opinions of ordinary Iranians, ultimate power resides with the theocracy, the Guardian Council and Supreme Leader, who are not subject to popular election. They are the custodians of Iran's nasty revolutionary principles and are especially unlikely to allow a political outcome that contradicts the basic tenets of the Islamic Republic. For them to reject a fraudulent election is doable. To accept a president embraced by the US would be harder. Supporting their right as citizens to form a representative government in a fair election can't hurt. But the most feasible way for them to do it is profess allegiance to Islam and the legacy of Khomeini, which of course reformers interpret selectively, but to accept a US embrace would be jumping the shark for them. Plus, we're not going to do a military humanitarian intervention in Iran, so we ought not egg Iranians on too much.

“To the people of Iran: You are rich in culture and talent. You have a right to live under a government that listens to your wishes, respects your talents, and allows you to build better lives for your families. Unfortunately, your government denies you these opportunities, and threatens the peace and stability of your neighbors. So we call on the regime in Tehran to heed your will, and to make itself accountable to you. The day will come when the people of Iran have a government that embraces liberty and justice, and Iran joins the community of free nations. And when that good day comes, you will have no better friend than the United States of America.” - President George W. Bush, January 13, 2008.

Don’t be surprised if the people who oppose obama are the subjects are. . .after the 2016 elections. And possibly the 2012 .

Would not be surprised at all. Consider Obama's 'cool eye' towards all this; a warning of sorts. Watch the images on the screen; and a 'fast forward' is not a stretch.

KC,

Thanks for the fill in about M. Beschloss.
I heard that interview live that morning and
could not believe the arrogance of the idiot.

I'm also not surprised that hes’ part of PBS’
News Hour. Prime examples of how these jerks
are held up to be total experts and are never
challenged on their exertions.

>>Do we really want to interfere in the elections in another country? Would we want any other nation to interfere here? No great fan of the guy in the White House, but there may be decent reasons not to do/say anything.<<

I respectfully disagree. I think it is incumbent on the United States to provide any support that it can even just moral support to the cause of freedom everywhere in the world to every nation.

We are supposed to be the shining light of the world for freedom. By staying out of the political discourse we are not helping people become free and enjoy the freedoms that we still have.

It is our duty IMO to do whatever we can anytime, anywhere.
