Uh-oh, Cheerios -- The FDA says the cereal is a drug
Washington Times ^ | June 21, 2009

The latest verdict from the Food and Drug Administration is that Cheerios is a drug. Parents, then, must be drug pushers.

The FDA sent a warning to Cheerios maker General Mills Inc. that it is in serious violation of federal rules.

"Based on claims made on your product's label, we have determined that your Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug because the product is intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease" the FDA letter said. "[Cheerios] may not be legally marketed with the above claims in the United States without an approved new drug application."

If the FDA were to win its enforcement action against Cheerios, all the boxes would have to be pulled from grocery-store shelves, and children could only get their morning "fixes" with a prescription from their doctors.

Two claims on the Cheerios cereal box upset the FDA: "Cheerios is clinically proven to reduce cholesterol 4 percent in 6 weeks" and, "Cheerios can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, by lowering the 'bad' cholesterol."

Susan Cruzan of the FDA's press office told The Washington Times the FDA is not objecting to the fact that clinical studies do, in fact, find that Cheerios do what General Mills claims. What concerns the FDA, according to Ms. Cruzan, is, "This is a food product, and they do have a health claim."

[Snip]

This is a prime example of the nanny state running amok. Only the government would work to classify a breakfast cereal as a drug for the offense of having correct information on its label.

A more appropriately labeled box of cereal -- which would upset the government even more.

>>”This is a food product, and they do have a health claim.” <<

What food doesn’t have an implied health claim. If you eat it, your body can convert it’s content to something that ensures your ongoing health.

Even McDonalds fries could make that claim.

We have a government of morons. This is a first amendment attack. They even say that what Cheerios says is accurate and factual, but apparently they need a license to say it.

Preposterous and insulting. I have no respect whatsoever for this government and, to be fair, this predates Obama AND Bush. This country is being run by intellectual children, for intellectual children.

The only health care information you are permitted to have is what the future government run medical systems will allow you.

The off shoot of a lot of this is if the government gets their hands on the ‘medical system’ watch to have your nutrition information diminish. Today they are picking on Cheerio’s tomorrow it will be Welch’s Concord Grape Juice. http://www.welchs.com/healthprofessionals/research-news

You make a good point, this could disprove their nanny-stating against McDonalds Fries and what cooking oils ‘private’ establishments use. They’re looking at those as a disease, correct?

At this rate if I get too much Vitamin A, i’ll need a prescription for carrots and one for my bananas due to the potassium helping with my muscle spasticity. Yet placenta in shampoo and conditioners fine. /s

Ha! A prescription will be needed for Cheerios! This administration shows how insane and out of hand they are at wanting to control everything.

So no more “Contains calcium for strong bones” because it might be inferred it treats osteoporisis?

THIS GOVERNMENT IS INSANE! We can use dead babies medicine, but can’t claim nutritious food is... NUTRITIOUS.

We can expect that they will soon take Trix to court for age discrimination and form a truth commission to determine if you really will go coo-coo for cocoa puffs.

Just don’t OD on them. You know, you start of with Cheerios thinking it is harmless, but then you progress to much more dangerous drugs like Fruit Loops.

I like Cheerios ... now I’m a drug addict? I liked the post above about having to get a perscription for carrots. Doesn’t anybody but us see the total JOKE of this administration?
