Study Ranks America’s Most Liberal and Conservative Cities
Live Leak ^ | Jan 23 2009 | unknown

A new nationwide study released by the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research (BACVR) ranks the political leanings of every American city and finds that Detroit, Michigan is the most liberal and Provo, Utah the most conservative.

In all, the BACVR researchers examined voting patterns of 237 American cities with populations of over 100,000 and ranked them each on liberal and conservative scales.

The list of Americas most liberal cities is dominated by cities with large African American populations that are concentrated in the Northeast, Midwest and California.

Conversely, the study found that the staunchest conservative cities are clustered in the South and interior West and have extremely low numbers of African American residents.

Detroit, MI, and Provo, UT, epitomize Americas political, economic and racial polarization, says Peter Thai, a BACVR researcher. As the most conservative city in America, Provo is overwhelmingly white and solidly middle class. This is in stark contrast to Detroit, which is impoverished, black and the most liberal.

Gary, Indiana, a rust belt former steel town, comes in as Americas second most liberal city, followed by Berkeley, California, which ranks third. Washington, D.C. comes in as the fourth most liberal and Oakland, California comes in fifth.

On the list of the nations most conservative cities, Texas cements its reputation as Americas most rock-ribbed state, having three cities in the top five. Lubbock and Abilene, Texas rank as the second and third most conservative cities, respectively, followed by Hialeah, Florida in fourth place and Plano, Texas in fifth.

BACVR researchers found a direct correlation between a citys political ideology and its racial makeup. The great political divide in America today is not red vs. blue, north vs. south, costal vs. interior or even rich vs. poor it is now clearly black vs. white, says Phil Reiff, a BACVR director.

While there are a few liberal cities without large African American populations, these wind up being the exceptions. College towns like Berkeley and Cambridge have modest black populations but remain bastions of upper middle-class, white, intellectual liberalism. These liberal white communities, however, are more reminiscent of penguins clustering together around a shrinking iceberg than of a vibrant and growing political movement, Reiff says.

The Bay Area Center for Voting Research is a nonpartisan think tank based in Berkeley, California. A full copy of the report and the complete list of rankings for all 237 cities are available at http://www.votingresearch.org

This is just a dumb article all the way around. Liberals live in cities, conservatives don't.

If you want to prove the liberal bias of the msm (although this article comes off some non-mainstream website), all you have to do is notice how they constatly run articles that only look at cities with populations over 100,000 (or 50k, 500k, etc.). This is where the libs live. You couldn't pay a real genuine god-fearing middle-American to live in a big city. Zoning and hillbillies just don't get along too well.

I will, in time. I have a younger sister in South Carolina whom I’m very close to. She’s always asking me to come down, but most of my family is still here. That may change in the not too distant future, and when that does, then I’ll probably leave. That is, if this idiot in the White House doesn’t plunge us into a depression first...

It doesn’t take much of a “study” to figure this out.

Cities these day are essentially concentrated parasite nests. The cities with the most parasites, ie., people who rudely demand that thuggish big government confiscate their neighbors’ money and “redistribute” it to them, are the most “liberal”.

Cities with the highest percentage of people who work hard, pay taxes, and want government out of their faces and out of their wallets are the most “conservative”.

It’s just a matter of counting up the numbers.

“You couldn’t pay a real genuine god-fearing middle-American to live in a big city.”

Hey, I take offense at that. Not cool. HAHAHA. I live in a city with a population of anywhere from 750k to 800k. It is an extremely liberal city. Surprised it didn’t make the list.

I see what Glenn is saying, but I like Markos33’s idea better...

The last group standing gets it all, and that includes Canada and Mexico. We'll have to let a few of the libs live of course, who else are we going to put on the chain gangs to clean up the mess in the aftermath?

I could totally see us doing what Glenn says and after a short time them coming back with tails tucked between legs. I think its funny that most donor states are conservative and most receiver states are liberal.

Perhaps my comments were carelessly strong. People do have to get jobs to support their families. Sometimes you have to go where the work is.

The point is that the msm regularly runs stories that pretend that small town America doesn't exist.

No doubt. I don’t take offense easily. I should have put an /s in there. I assumed that the HAHAHA was sufficient. My mistake. I do hear you though, if I could find a job like I have now out in a country community I would be there in a heartbeat.

Maybe white conservatives need to shun birth control and have larger families.

Well, that's very interesting. Allentown has a large Hispanic population which has largely taken over the "central city", such as it is. I suppose a poll like this all depends on who you ask.

“NJ with 2 liberal mentions. Surprised Camden didn’t make the list.”

The list is for cities with 100,000 population. The last I heard Camden had 87,000, probably less now.

With all the phantom employees and voters in Camden, I’m sure it is well over 100,000.

Growing up in Tampa, we always viewed the beaches as more liberal. Maybe it had something to do with the size of the girls’ swimsuits.
