There wasn't much Reagan could do when the Poles and Solidarity, but he spoke loudly and often and made known to the Soviets that nothing would be discussed with the Poles in chains. He sought out John Paul II and Maggie Thatcher and laide the groundwork for the fall of the Evil Empire.
