A Threat We Can’t Ignore (gun owners)
New York Times ^ | June 20, 2009 | Bob Herbert

...

There is no Obama gun ban on the way. Gun control advocates are, frankly, disappointed [so far].

What’s important to grasp here is that this madness has nothing to do with hunting, which the politicians always claim to be defending, and everything to do with the use of firearms to resist policies and lawful government actions that some gun owners don’t like.

In a speech in February to the Conservative Political Action Conference, the executive vice president of the N.R.A., Wayne LaPierre, said: “Our founding fathers understood that the guys with the guns make the rules.”

A new book by Dennis Henigan, a vice president at the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, goes into detail on this point. In “Lethal Logic: Exploding the Myths That Paralyze American Gun Policy,” Mr. Henigan refers to a Harvard Law Journal article written by an N.R.A. lawyer titled, “The Second Amendment Ain’t About Hunting.” In the article, the lawyer makes it clear that for the N.R.A., the right to bear arms is “directed at maintaining an armed citizenry. ... to protect against the tyranny of our own government.”

There was a wave of right-wing craziness along those lines during the Clinton administration. Four federal agents were killed and 16 others wounded in 1993 during an attempt to serve a search warrant at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Tex., where a stockpile of illegal machine guns had been amassed. The subsequent siege ended disastrously with a raging fire in which scores of people were killed.

In the aftermath of Waco, the N.R.A. did its typically hysterical, fear-mongering thing. In a fund-raising letter in the spring of 1995, LaPierre wrote: “Jack-booted government thugs [have] more power to take away our Constitutional rights, break in our doors, "

“I was going to post a comment of my own”

Why didn’t you? Great comment! One thing you might want to add: “The supression of a free press such as the NYT through regulation and force in every authoritarian state in the world? Legal!”

That’s something these moonbats really don’t get. If they ever got their way, the state would consider their “useful idiot” status to no longer be so useful, and they would inevitably be the ones literally put against the wall and shot first. This would include many of the NYT editors and staff and many of the moonbat commenters!

“As if the whackos weren’t dangerous enough to begin with....”

One wonders if he includes veterans in that, the way the current head of homeland security does.

IMHO

Herbert needs to be reminded of what Democrats believed back when they were honest and patriotic:

“Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used, and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible”

Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (D) Minn.
“Know Your Lawmakers” Guns (magazine), February, 1960, p. 4.

Precisely. Is there a problem with that?

John Adams:
Be not intimidated... nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Samuel Adams:
And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press, or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; or to raise standing armies, unless necessary for the defense of the United States, or of some one or more of them; or to prevent the people from petitioning, in a peaceable and orderly manner, the federal legislature, for a redress of grievances; or to subject the people to unreasonable searches and seizures of their persons, papers or possessions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Richard Henry Lee:
To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James Madison:
Americans need never fear their government because of the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James Monroe:
Of the liberty of conscience in matters of religious faith, of speech and of the press; of the trial by jury of the vicinage in civil and criminal cases; of the benefit of the writ of habeas corpus; of the right to keep and bear arms.... If these rights are well defined, and secured against encroachment, it is impossible that government should ever degenerate into tyranny.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
George Mason:
To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Attributed to George Washington:
Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon, and citizen's firearms are indelibly related. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable. Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place with all that's good. When firearms go, all goes; we need them every hour.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Patrick Henry:
The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thomas Jefferson:
God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

No free man shall ever be de-barred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain their right to keep and bear arms is as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

To preserve the freedom of the human mind then and freedom of the press, every spirit should be ready to devote itself to martyrdom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gun Control is life insurance for those Government Officials scheming to steal the rest of your Bill of Rights.
"The NYT has a long history of never letting the facts get in the way of the story the editorial board is trying to tell."
Yup, just like ABCBSNBCNN. And it is the reason that all their stock (both financial and societal) is dropping in value.
The first step should be to bring additional gun control back into the policy mix.
It's kind of weird and somewhat comforting. At the national level, the rats don't have the balls to push for more gun control.
It's only in places that are not "red" states that they push for more gun control.
The marxists in the drive by media have so distorted the national dialogue that they call states in the forefront of individual liberty "red" states. That's quite Orwellian.
...the New Yuk paper. The situation against the Second Amendment would have been worse, if the bipartisan Million Mom March manhaters (now under other organizational names) had managed to get Giuliani elected. Thank goodness, that we didn’t fall for their vulgar bandwagon approach.
As for ammo, the market should be getting saturated. It’ll be more available before long.
Maybe the following link will help for finding cartridges. There are no discount stores anywhere near here, in the middle of nowhere. And I’m cheap, so I handload.
I have been luck at several dept stores that are set up alot like wally world. I call several in both fairbanks & Anchorage; then have friends pick it up for me; get it off them when I get into town. I got 20 some boxes of hornady 460 mag for 32 bucks a box, course last year it was 22 bucks. I've had 30-40 boxes of 44, 480 mag for many years. No joke, I'm finding it around by just making some calls. 06, 7mm, 300, 338 mag ect are everywhere. I'm seeing 223. but it's 400 /case. I ordered 10 lbs of H4227 & H4831 and got it, still waiting on primers. I hope it's just a supply problem that will work itself out by winter. But you know, I'm as guilty as everybody else paying inflated prices; still I feel better having more than I'll ever shoot myself in my lifetime. Back in slickster's time, I bought 8-9 cases 223, still have most of it, ain't sellin either, ha; still wish I had bought even more back then when she was super cheap.
Get on the phone and call around, also I find some sportsworld type stores are really gouging everybody. I bought a stagg arms 15 this spring for 1000 bucks, sportsworld quoted me 2000 bucks, unreal; so you got to watch out on the prices.
After reading tripe like this and the idiot responses to it, I have a desire to buy another gun and stock up on more ammo.
Guess that makes me one of those “hate filled” right wingers, just like our Founding Fathers.
Didn't news paper office used to catch fire for publishing anit-freedom/liberty propaganda?
They did, but in the case of the New York Times, they are doing it to themselves in slow motion, so no one need bother.
