Latino leaders protest Senate's removal of (illegal) immigrant provisions (WI)

Leaders in Milwaukee's Latino community expressed outrage Wednesday that state Sen. Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) and other Democrats removed provisions in the state budget that would allow some undocumented students to pay in-state college tuition and let illegal immigrants obtain certificates to drive legally.

Both measures had passed the Assembly and are included in the governor's budget. Voces de la Frontera, an immigrants' rights group, and supporters have written hundreds of postcards and lobbied hard for both measures that were spearheaded in Madison by Rep. Pedro Colón (D-Milwaukee), the lone Latino in the Legislature.

But late Tuesday the Senate Democratic caucus removed both. Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the director of Voces, said she was told that Carpenter told legislators that Latinos in his district were opposed to both measures.

"It's an absolute disgrace and unbelievable that he would make such a statement," she said during a hastily called news conference Wednesday morning.

Carpenter, who represents a district with a large Latino population, said Wednesday afternoon that the driver's license proposal should be a separate bill and not inserted into a two-year budget bill "in the middle of the night." He added that the plan "needs work."

In a brief interview, he did not address in-state tuition, which he has supported in the past. He could not be reached despite numerous other attempts through his office, and his staff could not direct a reporter to Latino constituents who oppose the measures.

Still demanding special rights for illegals. It's good to see that, for now at least, some lawmakers get it.

It would seem to me that with unemployment approaching ten percent every where, and more in some states, with states having record budget deficits, it might be just a TAD difficult to make the case for giving tuition discounts to people who jumped the fence, cut the line, and tried to get ahead of everyone else who came here legally. One would think. Of course, one would be called heartless by liberals, which is a conservative’s way of knowing he’s on the right track.

Even in better days we got a no vote on amnesty out of Debbie Stabenow here in Michigan. Obama is a real fool if he thinks he’ll be able to shove amnesty through without a major fight.

If in State tuition for illegal aliens is going to be the norm why shouldn't any American be given the same opportunity? For that matter why can't I get an in state hunting license in Vermont when I live in Pennsylvania? That seems rather unfair doesn't it? And for that matter, why shouldn’t I get free donuts and coffee every morning at the dunkin donuts? They're very good and I don't have a lot of money.

Life by its very nature is unfair in a lot of respects. We don't always get what we want or even need for that matter. We get what we deserve and what these illegals deserve is a good swift kick in the ass back to whatever stinking hell hole they came from.

“Even in better days we got a no vote on amnesty out of Debbie Stabenow here in Michigan.”

She voted NO? I didn’t know that.
I hope you’re right about the amnesty bill. I’m fearing it will sail right through. I just don’t think Americans care about the law anymore. Certainly Congress doesn’t.

Tough. Get over it. America has money problems. You are part of the problem, illegal latinos. I can never understand why these people can’t seem to change their own country. It’s truly an act of cowardness to not want to make you own country the best it can be.

A good example of why conservatives should not forego making demands of their democrat representation. We may not have voted for them but we are still their constituents and have every right to make demands of them.

It’s good to know. I made calls to both senators at the time but assumed it wasn’t going to make a bit of difference. In fact, if I remember correctly, the mail boxes were full...my guess was that they just erased all the messages and did whatever they wanted to do in the first place. This is very good news.

What part of ILLEGAL ALIEN do these Illegal Immigrants not understand?

They broke the law to get into the USofA . . . So WHY are they mollycoddled?

Back during The Great Depression, President Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens that desperately needed work.

Harry Truman deported over two million Illegal's after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.

And then again in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 million Mexican Nationals! The program was called 'Operation Wetback'. It was done so WWII and Korean Veterans would have a better chance at jobs. It took 2 Years, but they deported them!

Now...if they could deport the illegal's back then - they could sure do it today!

I agree, and we have the same rights as a police officer, right?

Don't know America very well do you? Over 80%, and that is with questionable polls, are for deporting illegals from the US and making the apply legally. This is a bi-partisan issue that scares the crap out of the politicians which is why they try to sneak the amendments through on separate bills.

Call, write and scream at your congresspeoples.

The fact that republicans lit this pass the assembly should pi** us all off.

I completely agree. The good news, from my perspective, is that one of my senators actually did what her constituents wanted. I didn’t expect it and I don’t anticipate that she’ll do it again with a lot of persuasion. Still, it’s good that she can be persuaded. She’s the newer congress member and probably feels a little vulnerable. The other one is so entrenched he’ll never listen. No hope there.

On situations I feel strongly about, I'll back up my email with a snail mail letter. Apparently the pols still value those.
