Senator Boxer does not understand or appreciate just what the term Ma am means in the military. It is akin to Sir and it represents the highest form of respect that one can give to another in that context It is normally used when addressing a superior. Perhaps he erred in the use of "Ma'am" and the use of 'senator' is more appropriate.

But isn’t this like the people here on Free Republic who are outraged that the press called George Bush “Mr. Bush”, rather than “Mr. President”?
