A pathological narcissist can be very charismatic — a master of molding themselves to a situation to please whomever they perceive to have the power or approval which they seek. Because they mold themselves so well, they are masters at fooling even intelligent people. It's part of the development of pathological narcissism in childhood. The child needs to survive their circumstances and therefore they become what they must to survive — NOT at all to say that this justifies the adult behaviour. It doesn't. It does, however, explain why so many people can be fooled by them.
