Shawna Forde and members of Minuteman American Defense — an anti-illegal immigration vigilante group charged in the double homicide of an Arizona man and his 9-year-old daughter and the attempted murder of the man’s wife — shared a stage, if not their vigilante streak, with former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo.

But accused killer Shawna Forde’s saga has become the subject of a classic political debate.
Before we get to that, here’s a quick refresher on Forde:
• She was once considered a rising star in the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, as evidenced by this quote from a “call to muster” the group posted on its Web site in 2006: “We have identified leaders among us like Shawna Forde, Bob and Kathy Dameron and Rody Martin, and we are now getting into confronting employers who break our laws by knowingly hiring illegal aliens.”
• That group kicked her out not long afterward, deciding she wasn’t trustworthy and was prone to acting erratically. And the Damerons, the Yakima couple mentioned above, severed ties with her soon after that. They say she stole money and medication from them and she was manipulative in the extreme.
• She started her own group, Minuteman American Defense, which Arizona authorities say she was trying to fund by killing and robbing a 29-year-old Latino man and his family. The man and his daughter both died from gunshot wounds. His wife survived.
The vast amount of published public opinion surrounding the killlings and Forde’s Minuteman past essentially pits those who already opposed the anti-illegal-immigration groups like the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and the Federation for American Immigration Reform against those who already supported them.
The immigration enforcement movement’s critics don’t make much of a distinction, if any, between the MCDC, FAIR, and Forde’s splinter group. They generally view the killings as a case of a right-wing extremist following through on the the anti-illegal-immigration movement’s inflammatory rhetoric.
The movement’s supporters, on the other hand, disavow Forde entirely and are quick to condemn her actions. They see no connection between the killings and their calls to action on behalf of an anti-illegal-immigration agenda. “How could she be acting on the movement’s behalf, when the movement essentially ousted her well before any of this happened?” they ask.
So what do you think? Does the anti-illegal-immigration movement bear some responsibility for these killings, or is it unfair to blame them for the actions of a woman they largely broke ties with much earlier?
