The insular Iranian Mullahs will always blame the Great Satan whenever they are threatened - because it unifies their populace, because it hearkens back to the glory days of the Great Revolution against the Evil Shah AND because blaming America makes confused Democrats eager to help them.

It doesn't unify their population, it solidifies their base. It is the rationalization for any violence against the population asking for more freedom. It is an attempt to make the good guys out as the bad guys. Alinsky’s play book all the way.
