Loyola College's Jesuit tradition calls for it to serve students who did not start with every economic, social or geographic advantage.
Widespread research, meanwhile, shows that standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT favor those from privileged backgrounds and that such tests are less predictive of college success than excellent grades and a rigorous course load in high school.
So, in search of a more diverse and accomplished student body, Loyola has joined a growing list of colleges and universities that no longer require applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score.

Test-optional policies might calm the widespread SAT anxiety felt by high school juniors and seniors, added Florence Hines, vice president of enrollment management at McDaniel.
"We're telling them, 'If you're worried about being a poor test-taker, don't worry about the test,' " Hines said. "We want students to know that it was never a big enough factor that we couldn't just let it go. We can take away one of the things that freaks them out the most."
Skeptics of the test-optional approach argue that grade-point averages are relative because of the wide disparity in quality among high schools. Standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT help admissions officers to put high school performance in perspective, advocates say.
"There is ample evidence that the SAT does an excellent job of predicting college grades," said Brian O'Reilly, spokesman for the College Board's SAT program.
O'Reilly said he doesn't understand why college admissions officers wouldn't want as much information as possible about applicants. No college would allow an applicant to submit grades for some classes and not others, he said, so why would the school count the SAT as a positive for many students but ignore it for many others?

The unspoken goal is to minimize the importance of criteria where blacks and Hispanics underperform.
Sub-prime lenders who encouraged people to take loans they could not repay have been rightly criticized, but where is the criticism for colleges that encourage unqualified to attend, knowing that will likely drop out but still be burdened by student loans?
Let’s just give EVERYONE who applies, a diploma.
Sure, why not? They already give an HS diploma to any student who can fog a mirror.
“So, in search of a more diverse and accomplished student body, Loyola has joined a growing list of colleges and universities that no longer require applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score.”
maybe they can submit a collage of magazine clippings or something made out of paper mache.
“Widespread research, meanwhile, shows that standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT favor those from privileged backgrounds and that such tests are less predictive of college success than excellent grades and a rigorous course load in high school.”
I really don’t understand this. I grew up with zero privilege; my family was poor and on welfare because my father developed cancer and my mother was disabled due to an injury at work just after my sister was born. I scored 1400 on my SAT. This is complete crap; unless they are trying to say “privilege = white”.
That’s exactly what they’re saying. And have been for decades.

And good-looking couples have good-looking children. Should the modeling industry discard photo applications in favor of a more diverse checklist that is fair to all socioeconomic backgrounds?
(Keeping in mind that this was in the days when there were only two 800-point sections with a top score of 1600, not three and a top score of 2400 as it is now)

Unbelievable. I cannot believe we have such insensitive people here at FR. This would exclude people who do not have the skills to make a collage.
They should be allowed admittance to college to learn how to do it.
Don’t worry. Political “Science,” Education, Womyn’s studies and other worthless degrees don’t require much intelligence to begin with. No problem. Move along.
College education is practically worthless nowadays.
My son just graduated. Hardly learned a thing.
” colleges that encourage unqualified to attend, knowing that will likely drop out but still be burdened by student loans?”
Hey, give ‘em a chance!!! Some Latinas may prove to be exceptionally wise, and may make it all the way to the Supreme Court!;)
in this economy, private universities are going to see declining enrollment and are going to have less $ to give scholarships to their minority applicants, as well. it seems to me that those who can afford to pay the private college tuition will have a leg up with regard to admissions, because colleges need paying customers.
Fortunately I never had to take another test after the day I left high school. In college you could give yourself and A for just showing up semiregularly. < /sarcasm, as if you couldn't tell>
I had one class that had a midterm but no final exam, and that's because the last half of the quarter was dedicated to presentations of our projects. I did mine on ripping CD audio files to MP3s. :-)
So I bust my ass studying, do poorly on the test and oh well.
Some minority kid sits around and does nothing, can’t pass the test and we have to scrap the test.
And that’s “fairness”?
.....gist of the article:....minorities can’t pass the test, so do away with the test....this is the best way to handle it....just ask a certain “wise” latina judge.
