Federal drug regulators warned consumers to stop using Zicam, a popular homeopathic cold remedy, because it could damage or destroy their sense of smell.
The action is an early indication that the Obama administration is likely to take far more aggressive enforcement actions against drug companies than the Bush administration did.

Rush did their ads and everything didn’t he?
13 people a year losing their sense of smell?
OK.. somebody list the side effects of the pill.
The States will not fall for it. I believe it is deeper than that. The silence is deafening. It may actually be stopping an attack on the US monetary system. I cannot get an answer.
Long ago I came to realize that I had lost my sense of smell. I kept having colds and sinus infections. Much later, when being tested for allergies, I was told that it can be the result of those very same allergies. I once and a great while might smell a bit of somethings, but not for long. And sometimes I am not sure if what I smell, can be smelled by others either, very weird.
It can be a bit like being blind. Smell really adds an important dimension to life that I miss. I also had to teach my daughter at a young age what gas smelled like because I worried I wouldn’t know when there might be a gas leak.
It can be a strange kind of disability, one that others are totally unaware of.
These people probably have allergies, and it is NOT the Zicam.
That has happened to more medications than I care to remember! Just let government stick their noses into something and RUIN IT!
I highly doubt that there is any connection between the anosmia and Zicam. Sounds bogus to me.
Anosmia after intranasal zinc gluconate use (American Journal of Rhinology, 2004)
Intranasal zinc and anosmia: the zinc-induced anosmia syndrome (Larygoscope, 2006)
Loss of the sense of smell may cause serious problems, such as failing to smell smoke, a gas leak, or spoiled food. Also, loss of the sense of smell is often linked with a loss of the sense of taste. People who cannot taste could unintentionally eat spoiled food and not appreciate flavors, and lose much of the pleasure of eating.
I guess I'd like to see these "reports," particularly the ones from "some people."
The second paragraph sounds just like it was lifted from a government press release written by someone who copied his/her fifth grade science essay on "Why is the sense of smell important." The kid forgot to add that we need it to detect then stench of fascism that is in the air.

I never buy Nyquil anymore because it doesn’t work. We (not FReepers per se, but the collective “we”) allowed this to happen.
We didn’t make a stink when they banned the product that WORKED, all in the name of stopping the meth labs.
Personally, I flatly refuse to give my name and address in order to buy cold medicine, so it’s back to chicken soup and lemon tea for me.
Oh, and BTW, what, exactly does Nyquil have to do with terrorism? This was all done under the Patriot Act (which I support, but not for cold medicine).
Bah, on all of them! Like making it harder for people to buy the Nyquil that works is going to stop or even slow down meth labs.

Hmmm...I smell Fascism hard at work...it emanates from Washington...
Not to the Obamaratchiks..
Thanks.
Thank you for the links.
warned consumers to stop using Zicam, a popular homeopathic cold remedyIt's a liquid containing zinc I believe. Thanks justiceseeker93.
Amen!
Why be afraid? Can you name one time where Government went after Rush and won? No you can't.
From that attacks of the Clinton adminstration to the attacks by Harry Reid to the attacks by the Obama WH earlier this year, Rush has come out stronger and more listened to than every before.
As Rush says, 'put a bag of manure in front of a Liberal and they'll step in it every time'. That's what will happen here too.
The fun part we be seeing how it happens.
Sorry you’ve got a similar deal with your sense of smell. Not as bad as someone losing their sight or hearing, but it is something that you do miss. I’m not totally smell-less now, but it’s not what it once was.
