Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) acknowledged Tuesday that he had violated the vows of marriage by having an affair with a campaign staffer.
The admission made in a televised appearance in Las Vegas shocked Ensigns Senate colleagues and delivered a serious blow to any hopes he might have had of seeking the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.
Political insiders in the Senate and in Nevada told POLITICO that Ensign began the affair with the staffer several months after he separated from his wife, Darlene. When Ensign reconciled with his wife, the sources said, he gave the aide a severance package, and the two parted ways.
Some time later, a Nevada source said, Ensign met with the husband of the woman involved and had what this source described as a positive encounter. Sources said that the man subsequently asked Ensign for a substantial sum of money at which point Ensign decided to make the affair public.
Ensign did not provide specifics about the affair Tuesday, nor did he identify the woman involved, except to say that she and her husband were close friends, and both of them worked for me.

Another one bites the dust.....
Oone of the tough things about politics, in this country, is that we Republicans are a bit unforgiving of our own, when they screw up.
Dems can do whatever they want, and still have the full support of the Party and the rank and file, it seems.
I am not saying that we should lower our standards, I am only saying that it makes it much harder to win, in politics, since -—
We all fall short of the Grace of God, don't we?
And, human failings happen on both sides of the aisle, but only seem to hurt Republican politicians.
The more I hear about this, the less of a big deal I think it is. Sure, it probably nixes any presidential ambitions he may have had, but that’s about it.
Apparently Ensign and his wife were separated at the time this occurred. They have since reconciled. Where’s the beef?
However if this man makes such terrible choices he is not WH material. More like Clinton with an "R" behind his name.
The woman was still married.
How do you know the position he was using???
We're not unforgiving - we want to burn them at the stake.
One more thing...
I’ve been married for 15 years, begining when I was only 18, and have been in the working world during all of that time. I have yet to have an affair. Why is it so difficult for these politicians that are all supposed to be ‘above us’ to do the same thing? When they meet an attractive lady, is it not enough to just LOOK at her ass?
Just damn! ....
OTPH, the woman was married so that still makes him a cad.
No only was he banging and employee but he was banging an employee's husbands wife. He is a low down dirt ball of a person.
Ya mean we have morals. The democrats don’t know what they are as they have no standards to even raise a bar on.
Isn't that what started Davids trouble with Bathsheba?
I have to agree. Also it sounds like the husband’s not much better as he wanted money.
Greta on Fox just covered this. She showed the clip of Senator Ensign standing in front of a restroom somewhere explaining he had an affair and it was the worst thing he ever did in his life.
Geez, couldn’t he have set the microphone up at a better place than in front of a restroom sign?
Greta then ended with ‘Senator Ensign promised his constituents that he would be working on his Senatorial duties. I guess he will be faithful to them but just not his wife’.
Ouch!
bwahahahhaha. Go figure him out.
Been married myself 21 years since age 26 and I haven’t cheated. It still pisses me off when people say EVERYBODY cheats. I do not.
That may be. I enjoy the site of a nice ass as much as anyone, I just don't hit it unless I'm married to it. ;^p
That’s a real shame.
As for the blackmail, maybe I’m being paranoid, but I can’t help but wonder if the state’s other U.S. Senator played a hand in that?
