Double-file restarts add new twist to road racing

SONOMA, Calif. — When NASCAR recently announced its new double-file restart rule, in which leaders of races no longer line up single file along the outside of lapped cars and are free to battle each other side-by-side for positions, everyone wondered what kind of impact it would have on Sprint Cup races.

So far, it hasn’t been that big a deal.

But then the Sprint Cup Series has not visited a road course — until now. Sunday’s Toyota SaveMart 350 at Infineon Raceway will offer the first such road-course test for the new rule, and drivers are wary of what it will mean.

“My strategy is going to be to survive, to be quite honest,” Jeff Burton said.

I have a feeling that’s why they are going to let the pony cars run NW next year...It darn well may help the manufacturers if the cars looked a little more like something you could buy.

Great idea!!! So good, in fact, I'm surprised it might happen. I've never seen a COT in a dealer's showroom like you used to be able to do with the older cars back in the "good ol' days" once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away. It might be safer, but there is very little "Stock" about the COT. Boring, yes...but not stock.

A technician in a friends shop here is Eureka races occasionally in the Nascar West League. He is at Sears point as a crew chief in the Nascar West race yesterday and is going to try to get Hershel's autograph for me. Sad Mcriff didn't make the race and I'm not sure about Joe's team as he hasn't called.
